tell me what you all think of this site i found. i may be intrested in importing a car. i think the regulations for a RHD are pretty lax here in texas. (i'm realy shure).:ylsuper

my local RI (registered importer) says that it is about 6,000 to fully prep a car right off the boat. BTW cars older than 1996 are cheaper.:ylsuper

I don't think driver placement itself makes something illegal, it's more that the car wasn't approved by the DOT.

Before the car can be shipped here from Japan it has to be ready for our roads (or else it has to be cut in half), which means however it comes here is g2g. I'm pretty sure there are not any regulations agaisnt RHD, as I've seen several SCC articles featuring street legal cars w/it.

Edit: Those prices are as cheap as I remember them being from when I was stationed in Yokota, which means you'll have to cover the cost of converting them to american standards.

well the 6000 usually includes all the necessary conversion parts. but i have a 91 s13 and it would be the donor car for a 180sx. that would bring the price way down. i have heard of a car being cut in half while in transit. the person was probably importing it bootleg style(smuggling). a RI here would probably protect you from that happening. it all comes down to communication.:ylsuper

hold on, you mean to tell me the car can't even touch american soil without being DOT legal? That seems a little bit screwey. Why can't you just tow it to a shop and have it prepped? Is the DOT or customs gonna be waiting at the dock and say "Nope, take it back to japan damn it!" ?

I had found that site quite a while back and did the whole research thing too. Any car that is coming into the US has to be changed over to its LHD cousin from the here. It must also go through all of the DOT and become certified. They can come over here, but they must meet an inspection like 30 days after arrival unless it will be smashed. The only car that stays on the RHD is the skyline:ylsuper . But that has to also become DOT, but only one or two companies do this and they charge anywhere from like 5-20k to do, for their past "research and development" to meet the standards. Like crash tests and stuff. This is to make it street legal.

I wouldnt mind finding out if i could ship one over for strickly track purposes :icesangel . That would still be pretty cool.

^-I don't know about that. According to this http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rule....html they do not need to be converted to LHD. You still have to get the registered importer to convert the car to be legal to Federal motor vehicle safety standards. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rule....html

well here it is: http://www.wallacelab.com/DOT.htm my theory is that if you have a donor car for all the parts then it should work. i want a 180sx! :ylsuper[/url] (isn't it ironic, i'm talking about taking a JDM car and puting USIM parts on it LOL)

Your plan seems relatively sound, I hope it works out for you. Although if I were to endure what seems like costly and complex process to import a JDM car I would opt for a model that was never available in any form in the US, i.e. skyline. 10 G's for a R32 GT-R sounds pretty enticing, or hell even a R32 GTS-T would be sick. @ $3500 for the GTS-T and $6000 for federalization you can have a genuine JDM car, albeit inferior to the GT-R it would still eat many a rice adorned car you encounter. Anyways I'm rambling, good luck with what ever you choose.

i would love to have a skyline. i would seriously give a kidney for a us legal R34 GTR v-specII :pface ,but for now, i wouldn't mind the hassle to have a 180sx. i think that would be the easiest for someone like me.

they dont accept credit card or checks...

now not 100% but it sounds a bit shady when they don't accept card

that means wire transfer is the means of transfer which alot of new car scams on emay are run like that

maybe I can see if anyone I know is or will be in Japan soon

BUT I've seen this site for years... so maybe its not a scam :D

the whole thing about rhd and lhd is kinda weird. because you get allot more hassle about the rhd drive cars.

the two companies that are selling skylines had to buy 5 extra one's for the goverment to crash test. and it costs the company something like 10k to get all the paperwork done.

my friend works at rbmotoring and he tells me this kinda crap. if you want you guys can go ahead and ask'em yourself.

rhd is 100% legal in the states. all these too good to be true offers to import jdm cars are scams! if you need more info check the skyline forums, there are detailed threads which include all the DOT's nazi like rules. dont get me wrong, if you want to pay through the nose you can import just about any car you want, but it will cost far more than $6000.00. why do you think motorex charges 50 grand for an r33 gtr v-spec? the car probably only costs them @ 20 grand when they buy it in japan , but then you end up paying for the modifications to conform to DOT standards and all the bull***t taxes, tariffs, and bonds. it's all about money.
