I've actually been searching on and off for a project car and keep jumping around on brand, type, etc.
I'm back on wanting a 240sx only this time I'm really interested in an s14 zenki or kouki, mostly the zenki.
I am on another 240sx forum but they do not get much traffic compared to here (at least in my thread) so I thought I would get quicker responses on certain details and help from people who know what goes into buying a 240.
My budget for the car itself is around $5k, which I think should be sufficient to get a somewhat decent s14.
I'm not trying to buy someone's super-modded project car they are letting go for "just 10k", etc. I want to start from a fairly new car, a few parts on it already is okay but I want to make it "my own"
A main issue is I can't do all of my own work.I'm not a student at a auto mechanic tech school nor do I have all the know-how to get a lot of the things that need to be done done. I can deal with some of the body, interior, and some motor things (not a complete auto retard) but when it comes to some specific motor things I don't know what to do. I can follow instructions, etc but for the difficult stuff I may have someone do it, and I help (Such as a motor swap) a friend of mine in the local drift scene (s13 240 hatch sr20det owner) has all of his serious work done by a friend of his in the drifting scene...he charges for it but if you help him it's not as bad. so I may have him do some of the work for the swap etc. Or, I may suck it up and take it to a legit shop that will be more expensive but most likely better off. It really depends how much I get into it.m I need to find the car first and analyze what needs to be done to it.
Goals for this project car?
- Something fun to tinker with
- A car to drive to keep miles off of my FX50
- A 'train station' car
- Use for my summer job so I don't have to drive the FX50 around with supplies all up in it
- If I end up going to an urban school for law, I may sell the FX so this would be my replacement DD for while I'm in school.
Style?
- A little drift mixed with a little JDM with a little striaght up restoration (I hate ill-fitting parts and s*** bodywork)
Will I drive it?
-Yes, I'm planning on getting it on the track, and like I said my friend is in the drifting scene so I'll probably end up in there.
To begin with, I want to leave the car alone and spend time cleaning the car up, doing the basic maintenance, learning to drive it (First stick car). Then I would probably enter some beginner autocross and track days and actually enjoy In "factory form" with minor suspension upgrades, then maybe get crazy with the hellafrush godzira JDM crap later.
My thing Is I like everything to be simple, clean, to flow well. etc. I like this:

(^vThat's the NAVAN bumper and sides, which I happen to lovev^)

even a kouki like:

You guys get the Idea...
I'm also open to earlier 240 hatches, because I think if they are kept CLEAN they look good... but that's usually a lot of work.

So, let the search begin (continue) The summer is coming up so it'll be a great time to work on a project car, while I'm working and don't need to worry about homework or term papers, haha. I also graduate in a few months and am planning on going to law school so it'll be a nice break between schoolwork......
