Hello NICO,
I've actually been searching on and off for a project car and keep jumping around on brand, type, etc.
I'm back on wanting a 240sx only this time I'm really interested in an s14 zenki or kouki, mostly the zenki.

I am on another 240sx forum but they do not get much traffic compared to here (at least in my thread) so I thought I would get quicker responses on certain details and help from people who know what goes into buying a 240.

My budget for the car itself is around $5k, which I think should be sufficient to get a somewhat decent s14.
I'm not trying to buy someone's super-modded project car they are letting go for "just 10k", etc. I want to start from a fairly new car, a few parts on it already is okay but I want to make it "my own"

A main issue is I can't do all of my own work.I'm not a student at a auto mechanic tech school nor do I have all the know-how to get a lot of the things that need to be done done. I can deal with some of the body, interior, and some motor things (not a complete auto retard) but when it comes to some specific motor things I don't know what to do. I can follow instructions, etc but for the difficult stuff I may have someone do it, and I help (Such as a motor swap) a friend of mine in the local drift scene (s13 240 hatch sr20det owner) has all of his serious work done by a friend of his in the drifting scene...he charges for it but if you help him it's not as bad. so I may have him do some of the work for the swap etc. Or, I may suck it up and take it to a legit shop that will be more expensive but most likely better off. It really depends how much I get into it.m I need to find the car first and analyze what needs to be done to it.

Goals for this project car?
- Something fun to tinker with
- A car to drive to keep miles off of my FX50
- A 'train station' car
- Use for my summer job so I don't have to drive the FX50 around with supplies all up in it
- If I end up going to an urban school for law, I may sell the FX so this would be my replacement DD for while I'm in school.
Style?
- A little drift mixed with a little JDM with a little striaght up restoration (I hate ill-fitting parts and s*** bodywork)
Will I drive it?
-Yes, I'm planning on getting it on the track, and like I said my friend is in the drifting scene so I'll probably end up in there.

To begin with, I want to leave the car alone and spend time cleaning the car up, doing the basic maintenance, learning to drive it (First stick car). Then I would probably enter some beginner autocross and track days and actually enjoy In "factory form" with minor suspension upgrades, then maybe get crazy with the hellafrush godzira JDM crap later.

My thing Is I like everything to be simple, clean, to flow well. etc. I like this:
Image
(^vThat's the NAVAN bumper and sides, which I happen to lovev^)

even a kouki like:
Image
You guys get the Idea...

I'm also open to earlier 240 hatches, because I think if they are kept CLEAN they look good... but that's usually a lot of work.
such as;

So, let the search begin (continue) The summer is coming up so it'll be a great time to work on a project car, while I'm working and don't need to worry about homework or term papers, haha. I also graduate in a few months and am planning on going to law school so it'll be a nice break between schoolwork......

Anyway, I've been searching on craigslist and the most appropriate one I've found that is within a reasonable driving distance from me is here: http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/2827208626.html

"CLEAN NO RUST 5 speed manual Z32 brakes ammazing stopping power 150000 miles and going up being daily driver brand new wires and spark plaugs ngk changed rear brake caliper pads and rotors new rad new battery if you really looking to swap the motor its great only reason I got the car was to swap....cons: sunroof need to be replaced(if you owned a 240 you kno how it goes) and the rear bushing need to be replaced either with bushing. Or collars replacements estimate 350 I wanted 4500 but due to replacement parts asking 4000.... also have an sr20det for sale (notchtop) s15 injectors splitfire coils ecu t28 turbo just no harness for $2000 any more questions hit me up 5165032555 i just dont have no time or money left this is my baby dont wanna sell it but have too...asking $4000 obo plenty more pics just get in touch with me..."

some more background: he's had the car for about a year, I know this because my friend in the drift scene mentioned earlier went to look at this car last year when the prior owner was selling it. At that time, it had no hood, crappy wheels, but drove and handled well, and was clean. it seems this current guy cleaned it up a bit which is nice, so that's a good sign. It can also be assumed that this guy bought the SR20 motor to do the swap and maybe didn't have the funds to complete it? Which may mean there's room for leverage on the price. ;)

here are some pictures both from the ad and from what he sent me:

Here's another one that is much further away, about 4 hours compared to 20 minutes
It's a bone stock '95 zenki SE A/T he also wants $4000 for it. It's near Baltimore.
http://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/2829155297.html
If I really wanted to start from absolute scratch, that would be a good option...the 4 hour drive kind of kills it though...

 SO, what do you guys think!?!

Read some of the stickies and look around google reading old threads about what to look for when buying.. Its been covered over and over again..

Figure out your budget and start looking at them in person.

I dont see why you needed a thread for this :gotme

Sometimes it's nice to get opinions from people who are more experienced. Like those who can look at the picture of one of the ones I posted and mention something not many would notice, etc. and Just general opinions on prices, etc.
Another reason is just to have a place to keep my search organized and something that will pop up on the new posts, etc or when people are looking through forum sections.

Obviously I have been searching google, forums, stickies, etc. Thanks for your helpful input.

Stop modding your fx50?

Make sure you get a real good alarm system once you buy one. Unless it'll get stolen like mine..

hey man, nice to get recognized on other forums haha.
I never really planned onn modding nor did I mod the FX50 much. Just did a few things here and there (muffler delete w/straight pipes, subs from old FX put in, a few electronic gizmos, had the GTR wheels on but sold them) but there is no aftermarket for it...pretty much why I want a project car like a 240sx to play with :woot:

yeah once I get one it will be sitting in my warehouse while I clean it up anyway. When it comes time to have it on the road it'll have a good alarm system going in along with my old k40 undetectable radar/laser. if it's a car that is road-ready, it will still get an alarm asap. haha.

I think you should choose the one you want... The second one that is stock is the one I would buy because if you buy it stock and do all the work yourself you know who did it and how it was done. Its your $$ though thats just my 2c... Good luck with buying... How close to MD ( baltimore ) are you? I live in Frederick MD...

I actually live right outside of NYC.
Which one are you talking about, the stock '95 a/t one in baltimore area? I like that one but the drive is 3.5hr and Im not sure if I would want to do that just to look at a car that seems to be priced OK. i do like it though. Black, stock, and unmolested...... kind of what I am looking for.

But, i think some of the ones in the later post are also good. yeah they have work, but some aren't too extreme besides engine and I can still make the car "mine". It's just a matter of price. I want to pay what the car is WORTH at most, i do not want to get ripped off.

just found a few more local ones:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/cto/2878486945.html
95 14.5 240 (s15 front) sr20det modded $7500 Westchester, NY

240 pricing IMO
All running prices what I would offer based on condition as long as running
The price ranges are based on suspension as that varies per car. Stock suspension bottom price.

Beat hatch 500$
Clean hatch 1000-2500
Sr hatch 3500-5000
Beat coupe 750
Clean coupe 1200-2700
Srcoupe 3800-5000

Zenki
Beat s14 1000$
Clean s14 2000-4000
Sr s14 5000-8000 w/ s14 sr 7500-9000

Kouki
Beat s14 1500. I've seen a perfect kouki shell go for that
Clean s14 4000-6000+ people ask stupid prices for these clean

Sr s14 7000-9000 s14 sr 8000-10000+ prices tend to get really stupid here

Just take that as an average guide lots of mods high price no mods low price

Thanks.

Im actually putting this search on pause now because after getting my LSAT scores back and doing better than I thought I may not be home for school anymore so not sure if I'll even have time or a place for a project car..I'll also need the money for rent most likely.
