why do japanese d1 cars have so much horsepower? on average they have around 450 to 500 ps. why do they need all that power just for drifting. i thought all you needed was a nice suspension setup, lsd, clutch. any explanations?

Speed.

The faster you go the more power you need to keep the rubbers spinning. For regular parking lot drifting a stock motor will do.

ebay I believe. its those electric ones , but here's the trick . they run dual electric turbos powered by six car batterys wired in series (counterweight to help swing the back out)!!

Honestly I tried discussing this before and got ragged on too. I said " I order to drift like our japanese idols your going to need 350 to 400+ hp". I was told "no way man , you don't need that much power , look at those ae86's , they only have like 120 whp and they drift super good!''

but are they drifting at the same speeds? answer no. and im not talking about anime intial d, the ae86's u see in the cartoons doesn't exist. a 500 hp car can obviously spin the tires at higher speeds, accel quicker and on a short track go faster. and as far as turbo lag i dont know. my guess is that they are normally in a low gear and running at hi rpms.

that was sort of my point my point. but the people posting just didn't get it.

We're talking about d1 drifting in general. Not just 100+ mph sideways tire shreading action. d1 cars rarely bust 90mph on those tight japanese tracks. My point was that this is a nissan forum and were are not talking about weak but fun ae86's. I don't hear any nissan guys talking about swapping a 4age engine into their 240's. That would be worst than a ka. Now imagine a 500hp ae86 -- overkiill right!?! Ae86 pro drifters need 150 to 225hp to be comptitive. Lighter car!! rps13 pro drifters need 350+ hp to be competitive. heavier car!! The heavier the car , the more power is needed to drift it successfully!!
