I'm not actually trying to start nothing, I just wanted people from the areas indicated to describe them. As I research my return to the states I have narrowed my target areas to three:

Northern Virginia south of D.C.
I am from that area and have recently visited so I feel confident about my expectations for there; taxes, traffic, crappy weather, and angry people. Ahhh home. :chuckle:

Norfolk area.
My work will revolve around a Naval or Marine Corps base and there is a significant presence here, I was born there, lived there when I was a young Maddy, and it has an emotional attachment for me. Anybody from Norfolk proper, Viginia Beach, Hampton, or Newport News could give me an idea of what the life's like there these days.

Jacksonville Florida.
I have never been there. I have no idea what to expect. Like Norfolk, there is a sizable military presence there, it's a coastal area, and there is no state income tax. Beyond that, I haven't a clue. I am ready to expect that the state finds other ways to suck about the same amount of money out of your pocket in the form of other taxes and fees. Hopefully a native can get me up to speed on that.

The things that are important to me when considering a place to set up shop are:

Weather.
Snow is fun, but it also sucks. NOVA gets dumb amounts of the white death, but I wonder about Norfolk. I would expect JAX gets next to none. I don't like super hot and I hate humidity. I would expect JAX gets downright humid in the summer time, Norfolk, I don't know. I already know NOVA summers sit on you like a fat sweaty chick. Mad likes his sunny breezy days with light cloud cover.

Crime.
I've been out of the states a loooonggg time. I'm in no mood for and do not want to put my wife in the middle of a crime zone. Wherever you are repping, how safe are you? How safe do you feel? Do you find yourself feeling a bit uncomfortable walking the streets at night, parking your car on the street, leaving your windows open at night etc. Mad has his CC and will armor the crib so I mainly worry about car theft and someone scumbag putting my wife in danger.

Economy.
Is your area doing ok during this recession? I know in NOVA, when I passed through, I saw definite signs of a contracting economy with shuttered shopping malls once lucrative and busy during the boom cycle shrivelling up after the bust. Do you know a lot of people in your area hurting and unemployed or are they hanging in there and doing ok? Are more people leaving the area or coming in? What does your infrastructure look like? Is the city fixing the potholes, staffing the police and fire departments and keeping the utilities up to spec?

People and housing.
How are the people? It's broad question I know, but what do you most frequently see around your area in behavior? Are people freindly? Do they keep to themselves? Are there any demographic tensions to be aware of, any parts of town to steer clear of? What are the predominant paradigms for housing? Are there suburban neighborhoods with single family homes, mostly apartments and condos, townhouses? What style of construction is prevalent, wood frame, concrete, etc.

Entertainment.
If someone only had a few days in your area to do something fun what immediately comes to mind? One of the reasons I like these two areas is their oceanfront location. Mad's going to get his boat and do some sailing. I would love to have a drag strip and/or a road course nearby. Live events like concerts and sporting events are of interest to me.

Any other cool stuff you think makes your area cool, speak on it! :dblthumb:

Both norfolk and jax get humid and hot in the summer, but jax is probably a little bit more nice. Norfolk's crime is kinda crazy these days.

That's about all I can contribute. Has it really been almost three years since you were here last?

VA has some crazy-a** laws. Their massive speeding fines come to mind.

Don't speed? Just a thought.

It could be worse, it could be Maryland.

Both are pretty armpit'ish, backwoods and fairly crime ridden. I do a ton of work at Langley and cannot stand the area and well Jacksonville produced Fred Durst, so that kinda speaks for itself.

In all seriousness, the DoD presence in VA Beach/Norfolk/Hampton Roads area is infinitely greater than anywhere in Florida. Also, DC is just a hop skip and a jump up the 95. All of this equates to job security and job options, two of the most important things in life.

Come to San Diego. Great weather, huge military presence, minimal crime.

Also unfortunately a part of CA, but I've become pretty willing to accept that.

I know you are wanting to move here, because I'm awesome and live in Va Beach.

Um the whole speeding thing in the 757 is kinda funny. Speed limit most places 55. Average driving speed of traffic when its moving is 65-70. I've never been pulled on the highway. Had troopers harass me with the the megaphone.

Lots do to do here. I'm sure you know about Dragva/vadriven.

Lots of taxes related to everything you own. Some cities are more fun to live in for one reason or another than others.

Also alot of proposed tolls being discussed right now. Which blows.

Yeah I remember getting a nastygram when I didn't pay personal property tax on the Supra I left in a garage back there. I typed them up a nice response, I mean actually typed, not email. I basically told them they could suck a fat one and they would get paid when and IF I decided to. Years later I went to sell it and checked for any outstanding taxes and penalties.
"That account was closed sir, no outstanding balances." :mike

Could be Maryland. The speeding fines are indicative of a larger government mentality I've noticed seems to pervade Virgina.

King's Bay, GA is nice. Big nuclear sub base there. Then you could be less than an hour from my folks place! Jacksonville is nice but is usually skipped on tours of bands and comedians and whatnot. There's the Jaguars, but no one cares. There aren't really any good tracks nearby. Lots of drag strips though, I think. Jacksonville kinda sucks.

It pervades the entire northeast corner of the country, and Kalifornia. That's what a strong liberal presence does.

Jax isnt horrible, but jobs are kinda few and far between for all of florida at the moment. No state taxes but it costs over 400 to register a car in FL, and sales tax is a tad higher. Crime in Jax isnt bad, nothing compared to Orlando. Tourists arnt that bad in jax cuz there really isnt anything to tour but St Augustine wich is pretty boring anyways. The weather is nice if you dont mind the humidity, and if you get hot jump in the ocean! The best thing about Jax is Im less then an hour away and we could hang out LMAO. (le sigh i have no friends). Good luck!

Registration here is cheap, but the biannual inspections are close to $1000 on my 180SX. My main concerns are items like property taxes and other local greed on the municipality.

Just remember: Florida is the California of the south. We don't really acknowledge it around these here parts.

Sorry about the confusing reference. I'll attempt to explain what I mean.

Florida isn't your typical southern state. It's more municipal and big government than you'll find in other parts of the south. There are some perks to Florida: legal fireworks, and more relaxed alcohol laws. That's about the extent of it. Where I live, and in most parts of the south from what I understand, there are no auto inspections or smogging or anything like that. Florida may be the exception, but if you're used to paying that much for car stuff, then you won't really mind I guess.

The biggest problem in Florida is Florida fans:

Also, vehicle inspections are negligible in Florida.

Thanks Datte good link.

And the pics of the florida fans is a little inconsistant with the actual population. You dont see very many guys like that in the areas i frequent. I love florida. I wouldnt live anywhere else honestly. The parts that are Urban are very Urban, and the parts that are rural are very rural. Its like half New York and Half Georgia/Lousiana with an abundance of old ppl awesome beaches, and great fishing. What else could you ask for?
