Ok, I know this is kind of a touchy subject, but in efforts to downsize my car bill, I have been thinking about a J30... Not only do they have a little more distinct styling, but they get better gas mileage...... Not to mention somewhat of an aftermarket because it uses the Z engine.....

But, I dont want to wish I had my Q back..... So what do you think?? Do they cost less to maintain?? Are there common J problems, like the chain guides.......?

Bottom line..... Will I be dissapointed if I get rid of my Q for a J??

Nothing happened to it...... But after reading longrunQs thread, it sort of scares me....... Even if I do DIY, I dont have a ton of money to be throwing around........ And I know I want to stay infniti........ I dont want the G20 because its too small, and I HATE FWD......... I like the Q better than all the other ones, but I can sacrifice some power for better gas mileage (that isnt a big deal to me) and lower maintenance.......

Like Q45tech said:

Honda Civic 8 cents a mile Q45 16 cents a mile asssuming good maintetance on both.

So your savings even by going to one of teh cheapest cars arent all that.

Also you seem like you are on teh right track maintenance wise.

Very few people even break even selling one car to buy another.

I went from a 93J to a 92Q and was very happy with the move. The J is "an extremely nice car". I loved the styling and performance. I had originally bought the J for wifey. She got the suv bug shortly thereafter and I "inherited" the J. I really liked the car but it was just to small for me. I am a large framed 6 foot tall and was traveling a lot by car back than ( business trips ). After 6 monthes I needed something bigger so I traded for a 92Q demo. It filled my needs better. I would suggest you really try and spend some time behind the wheel of a J before making the purchase. Find a dealer with J's available for test drives. Either way you can't go wrong, they are both great cars.

How much faster is the Q than the J???

See, im doing quite a bit when it comes to preventative maintenance (I plan on doing the o2 sensors, knock sensors, etc), and I dont want something to really go wrong...... I have already started saving for a transmission, since I probably only have another 25k on my current one, maybe less......

The early Q's are governed to 155mph.

I'm pretty sure 130 mph is where you run out of gearing in the J. Though I will neither confirm nor deny that this is from experience.

Also you'll probably find that the gas milage isn't substantially better in the J. Not enough to become a cost issue.

Like I said...... Gas mileage isnt a big deal...... I dont drive a lot, so my gas bill isnt too bad anyway.....

I am more concerned about the other maintenance.......

The J has the same transmission gears as the early Q but the 3.538 diff gear goes up to 3.90 or so so the engine turns 10% more rpm in each gear relative to speed -- compared to Q....Plus the smaller diameter tires of the J add another 3.33%.

So at 60 mph instead of 2,000 rpm the J is turning 2275 [more or less]................5200 rpm at 135 for the J whereas the Q is turning this at 155 mph in 4th gear.

The lighter 300zx non turbo was decent because of the 5 speed manual and a 4.083 diff gear..........5% more torque and rpm plus the lower losses of manual and less weight of body style.

The J shocks and front struts are more expensive and wear out the same. There is no uppper link but the same tension rods, the transmission must be maintained better than the Q as it is a smaller lighter duty unit.

id like to say if a car doesnt have enough legroom, have the seats relocated to give ample room.cheaper than buying car w/legroom.but if your torso man whatch out for the low roof.

The transmission was one of my main concerns....... As the Qs can usually go for quite a few miles with good maintenance and a cooler.......

And Im not too concerned about legroom...... As long as the front left person has pleanty of room, thats all that matters........

The J is rev limited to 5000rpm in 4th gear at ~130 indicated. Get an aftermarket ECU and you could get 145.

I tell you what, it would take some time and wide open to hit 145 in the J.

I meant with stock gearing. It pulls to 120 fairly quickly. But 120-130 takes some room.

J is a nice car. I really like the unique dash and lighting (center consol spotlight). But when you are used to a Q the J does feel cheap. There's something about how the Q feels (expensive/REALLY nice, don't know how to put it in words, grand maybe?) when you pilot it down the road.

An I30 may be a better candidate for lower cost of matinance and it's much better space wise than the J.

J30 is nice. I think you should just get a cheap car like a civic and bite the bullet for a few years. The money you save, you can get a better, newer car like the G35 or something like that. Maybe even a Bimmer 3-series. Trading from a Q to J wouldn't save you that much and you'd still be driving an old car that is going to be a money pit.
