Hey everyone, I have this J30 VlSD from a 94' that has been sitting here for awhile. I did plan on using it on my 240 but change my mind. Today I looked at it and notice that there if quite some resistance when I try to turn output flanges. Theres nothing holding the input shaft. Is there pose to be some resistence? I can barely rotate it...would letting it sit caused it to seized...is there any way to fix it..?

Yea its a viscous fluid diff. Of course you wont be able to turn it when its cold.

Sorry for the noob question, but do ALL J30's come with a VLSD? If not, what years or model trims came with the VLSD? Thanks a bunch!

Sorry for the stupid question, but what does a VLSD do?

I have a 93, so I guess my car isn't equipped with one, right?

Thanks for any info!

Us old fellers call it Posi-Track

You cant really miss it. One looks like a triangle with 2 bolts in each corner (3x2) and the other looks like a star (5x1).

Look at the Q diff. It has 6x1 flanges (I think). The 5x1 look 'jagged' like that. (thanks for the pic, Brian)

Here's a good pic of the 3x2 flanges.

If the diff is difficult to spin, thats a sign the viscous fluid is still in good shape. Of course, all are gonna be a little harder to turn in cold weather.

I think all J30's have VLSD's, including the 93 model.
