Hey everyone,

I am new to this site, although I have read alot of comments on here, this is my first post. I have a 97 J30, 192k. Recently I left my lights on for close to 6 hrs. and the battery was obviously drained. I jumped it and left the car running to recharge the battery, which may have ended up being a bad idea.

Fast forward a week later, 3 lights, the brake light, headlamp light and battery light came on and will not go away. I charged my battery overnight and put it back in. The next day I was driving and the car's hud lights came popping up(more than the original 3) and I pulled over and shut the car off. I tried to restart the car and it wouldn't work, I managed to get my battery to autozone and had them charge it and it tested fine. I put it back in my car and drove home, which was close. All lights(the original 3) remained on after both battery charges. After reading on NICO, I suspect it is the alternator, I took a look at it and it is OEM. When my battery died the first time could I have burned out my ALT, trying to recharge the battery? Or could there be a loose connection to the ALT? Or something completely different? Also I have a squealing belt when I first start up the car, but only when it is very cold.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

The belt squeal is a bad Alt belt, it may be glazed badly enough to not pull the alt, check or replace that first then if nothing have auto zone bench check the alt.

Also know that a bad battery can take out the Alt AND visa versa.
When my alt was going out the brake and a few other lights lit up "Dimly".

hey everyone, thank you for the info. I'll get the belt done first and let everyone know. In the event I do have to get a new Alt, I have been doing some research. I heard this Alt is compatible with the J and It is a rebuild from Nissan, will this Alt do the trick if in fact I need to replace it?

The TT 300zx and the J share the same Alt.. so yes, that will work.

Alright, so I had my mechanic test the battery and the alternator and it looks like the alternator is not sending a current back to the battery. Before I went to him, I checked(looked new) and tightened(pretty damn tight) the alternator belt. Looks like the Alt finally died, not bad for 15 years and 190k+ miles. So I will be getting the Nissan 300zx Alternator. http://www.conceptzperformance.com/Cart ... .126.131.6 Someone said the Twin Turbo is the one to choose, which year set do I need the 90-93 or 94-96?

Just a follow-up; installed the nissan 300zx twin turbo 94-96 alternator. Works great and would recommend anyone who needs to do an alternator go through the guys above. Saved a ton of money versus going through infiniti.
