I have this weird problem in the last one week. I got oil change and then I started to hear a clicking from transmission when I step on brakes. This is the same clicking when the transmission is on P and when you step on brakes. This is not expected to be heared when the transmission is not on P. I am not sure if I should take the car to a mechanic?

If it is the same click you hear when the car is in P then the shift knob lock relay (dont' know the exact name of it) may be malfunctioning.

I don't recall my car doing that click in a gear other than Park. Are you 100% sure it's the same click?

Also, when you say you got an oil change, are you talking about the transmission fluid, or the regular motor oil? If it's the motor oil, I don't see how the two could be related.

Thanks a lot Carlos for the quick response. I mean I hear the same click. I hear it when I step on the brake. It was motor oil change. I dont see the relation either. But this problem happened afterwards. I hear it 60% of the time now. Never heard it before. If we assume it is the same click, what should I do?

With the recent oil change, did you switch oil brand or oil weight?

Yes. I went to another mechanic. But I guess they were the same oil weight. Brand may be different.

This "click" does ring any bells with me. Any change in performance?

How cold was it when this happened? I had the same thing happen to me last week when It was extremely cold. It has nothing to do with the transmission, however, the noise "clicks" right near the shifter. When it happened, it clicked when I pressed the brakes in park. I was thinking it has something to do with the ABS relay or something, but not sure what it is. It hasn't happened since (knock on wood) but if anyone knows what it might be I would be interested in finding out.

Seems to me that it must be related to the shift interlock with the brakes. You know, that "safety" device added to cars after a rash of people crashing their Audis into swimming pools and supermarkets.

After I changed my oil to Mobil sync blend, the engine runs much smoother. I started to hear those clicks also. I think those clicking sounds were there before, but due to the engine running so loud, I could not hear them.

That click is the shift lock release.

I dont think it affected the performance. It was around 30F, not that cold. That click were there before but only when the car is in P. I don't think you should hear it when you press on the brake and the car is not in P. I am planning to change the transmission fluid soon and I hope it goes away.

I know my car ALWAYS makes that click when in Park but I don't recall hearing it in any other gear.

Would that relay click on and off in gears other than P? Doesn't seem like it should.
