Hi,

My 93 Infiniti J30 with 89K miles on which I did a transmission flush about 3 days ago is now almost dead. A brief history, last month Inoticed a little hard shifting while stopping, hence took it to a mechanic and found that the coolant had mixed with the transmission fluid and did a transmission flush, coolant flush, pan drop, filter change etc and again a transmission flush. Drove it for about 300 miles and hard shifting started to happen again. Took it to the same mechanic and did a transmission & coolant flush and pan drop. Drove it for about 50 miles and yesterday all of a sudden it lost all power. If I shutdown the engine and restart it, it will go for about 100 yds and stop again. One thing I noticed is the transmission fluid level is way over the required mark. Looks like he overfilled the fluid. Does this make a difference ?What do you guys think ? Is my transmission dead ? Are the trannies sold on Ebay by Phoenix guys any good ? How much labor am I looking at ? Should I take it to a dealer who can diagnose this or am I better off going to my mechanic ? PLEASE HELP !!!Saleem

Over filling transmission is not good.

Can you provide a link for these Phoenix guys. We might have to send agent Hitman to investigate.

Your transmission fluid mixed with your coolant? The only way that could happen is if there's a leak in your radiator, where the 2 fluids cross thermal paths. If they didn't replace the radiator, the new fluids probably mixed again, destroying the lubrication of the transmission fluid, and now your transmission's toast. It would explain why the level is high. Perhaps your coolant is low as well? If this turns out to be the case, please let us know who did the work so our members can steer clear of that place.

Excellent deductive reasoning, Daedalus.

Another great reason to abandon the integrated heat exchanger and go with a seperate isolated cooler. Never seen an oem cooler cross leak but sure if you didn't change the ATF/and coolant every few years the acid build up will do some damage.

Anyway an 11 year old transmission is way past its prime regardless of miles..........that's why there is only a 6 year new warranty.

You have to weigh how long you want the replacement transmission to last vs how much you spend. For those that want 2-3 + years the factory remann is the only way to go..........unless you live in the same city as an alternative reman facility.....freight and warranty are the consideration.

I know J30 shift a little hard when downshifting to first. At what point in the shift maze was it shifting hard at initially? What other warning signs did you have in retrospect?
