I just got my windows tinted on my J and the guy at the tint shop told me he cant do the top part of my rear windshield because of the dot-matrix setup or something like that. Is this true or is he just trying to rip me off. He told me that for $30 there was something else they could cover that area with to match the tint.

ok...so thats a relief..thought he just ripped me off. he said that he can put a vinyl piece of something like that that will match the tint. Have you ever head of doing that? I think the price was $30bucks.

The previous owner of my car solved the appearance problem.

Used a darker strip across the top, hides the bubles and gives some more protection for the interior

They also put a black vinyl strip on the outside to cove the joints to the edge of the window.

Got cold steel on my windows so even if it did bubble a little you wouldn't be able to tell, but a buddy of mine did my car and he used some kind of stick glue on the dots. Stuck just fine, no extra pieces and the tint matches all around.

yea i read about that...but i dont think the place that installed mine will do that...i think im gonna take it this week and get the vinyl strip put over the top and see if i cant get them to fix the damn bubbles around the edge...its annoying that some of the bubbles were pushed out and its black there and then some spots are filled with air and its white.

That's very strange that he said that. I guess it really depends how good he is. My guy has been tinting windows forever and did it over those dots no problem. He said some cars are worse than others, but it looks fine and you can't see any problems at all.

I have a lighter tint, at 50%.

Mine it tinted 20% all around. I had the metallic tint done so it doesn't turn purple. I have a '95 J. My tint guy tinted over the dots and while you can tell a little it does not look trashy or anything like that. It can be done. If you are looking for perfection then you can try something on the inside like tape or something. I have even seem it where they just tint from the bottom of the dots to the bottom of the window. From the inside that looks pretty getto so does the tape for that matter. But I don't know what to tell you. Sorry.
