My Infinity dealer told me that when I bring my J30 in for timing belt replacement, they might replace the tensioner at the same time, an extra $450 job. I just wonder if any J30 owner found it necessary to replace the timing belt tensioner? My J30 is of the 1993 model and had about 115 K miles. This would be the 2nd timing belt.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

They suggest the tensioner and water pump with a TBelt exchange.450 is mighty steep since they are already in there !

I'll be doing my own when the time comes. If I recall the whole TBelt kit from Joe is less than that.

WTF, $450 extra for replacing the tensioner, are you kidding me, the tensioner only cost ~$130, so they charge you $320 for a 3 minutes jobs. WOW!!After the timing belt is off, and 4 bolts the tensioner is out. If there is no leak, yo don't have to replace it. That is what the part manager told me.

We have a hydraulic belt tensioner to keep thetension on the timing belt, if there is no leaking of fuild on the tensioner, you can reuse it.

Loud dinging, accompanied by a bright flashing yellow light. If you meant 115K on the motor, you should not be due for a belt. If your '93 got a new belt in the vicinity of 60K, the replacement by then was kevlar, with a service life of its own of 105K miles (if it's 115K on the belt, then you're pushing your luck). And extra $450 for a tensioner is absurd. That must be for a $375 part, which is criminally inflated. "Might" replace it during a timing job is also suspect- the water pump and tensioner are routinely replaced along with the belt.

I would seek out another shop.

My local Infinity service department guy told me that the tensioner costs $350 (Cdn), plus 1/2 hour of labor, $50. Plus GST and PST, the total for this alone is more like $500, which converts to $450 US roughly.
