Just looking for some basic info here;

My J30 has 104,000 on it, not sure what the vehicle service history is so I've contacted the previous owner.

The dealer has quoted me 460.00 to replace the timing belt, the funny thing is I have similar quotes from non-dealer shops so naturally I would go to the dealership.

Any visual inspection a shop or dealer can do to determine if the belt needs replacement? Should this repair just be done no matter what?

Thanks to carlos_knology for all your help so far, this is a great site!

Your belt is due to be replaced at 105k. Also replace all drive belts; idler pully; water pump; thermostat; upper, lower and bypass hoses and cam seals while you're there.

Thats not a bad price. Keep looking and you might find it lower somewhere else. The job isnt particularly unique -- any shop should be able to do it thanks to how common the motor is.

Nice thing is, after all that youre set for life (another 100k).
