I've got my hands on a 1997 j30t, while the price was discounted I have no idea of its history and the agent said it had a timing chain (I was used to the sr20de and believed him). So I have no idea when it was last changed. The car has 142k.

How can I visually tell the wear on the belt? When is it supposed to be changed? Do I have to change other belts as well? And which belt exactly is the timing one?

There may be an inspection window in the upper cover through which you can see the belt. The belt cannot be seen without peering through this window or taking the covers off. You'll know when you find it--it's the big one. I'm not certain but I think the '97 models had belts good to 100k. The accessory belts should be changed if they're glazed or cracking.
