I completed the task of changing out the timing belt, timing tensioner, and water pump according to this:

zerothread?id=198122

However, as I go to start the engine I fill up the radiator which I know will not fill the engine(if you have a tip on how to do this i would appreciate it). Now, the engine will crank, it runs for a little bit and I get a really high pitched belt squeal, could that be because of an accessory belt I tightened too much? Also, I go to start the engine a third time and it makes a noise like the starter is grinding against the fly wheel. Could I have misaligned the starter?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

First you put water and antifreeze mix into the radiator, till it wouldn't take anymore, then start the engine and let it run with the radiator cap off, put in more if the level go down, let it run and keep checking the fluid level. The squealing noise is very likely coming from the accessory belts, but it likely to be not tight enough, instead of too tight.Did you take the starter out? THe way i did it, i didn't have to mess with the starter. If you did check it tomorrow, if you put the starter in correctly, you can not "misaligned" the starter.

I talked to the girl who drives it often, according to her the starter makes that noise normally, but it sounds like the starter is just grinding on the fly wheel. Is that normal?

Sounds like a few missing teeth on the flywheel.

So, as long as the engine turned over at all i'm ok?

I just don't want to crank it again and get a blown engine.

Go ahead, keep your fingers crossed and crank it. That is the only way to know if you did the job right. Good Luck

I've been able to get the car running well after multiple starts. Though I have tightened the accessory belts to the limit and they still make a lot of noise when stopped or at slow speeds. Especially when the a/c is on at a stop. Any hints as to why the squealing is so bad?

Yes these belts are factory belts that are brand new. I really don't think they should be this bad, the a/c is still functional and blows cold so I know the compressor is doing ok.

If I pull on the belts they tend to move give or take about 1/4 of an inch in either direction.

Wow, I tightened them up to what would seems like a ludicrous threshold close to that of belt death and all of the noise is gone! lol this forum rocks!

Hello I've a question for you since you anwser alot of them. J30 1994 it won't start after stalling on highway. Got fuel, hear pump checked fuel lines, relays and fuses. Timing belt is loose on driver side where I removed half the cover. Turn motor notice slipping under camshaft. Is it too late for a timing blt change, thanks if you could answer these questions. Your engine may be toast. Do some research on this site (timing belt) and you will find out why, and exactly how to change the belt. But in short, if the belt goes while it's running the valves and pistons hit each other. Please post back and let us know how it worked out. Sorry for the bad news

Well replaced belt still no-start cranks. I believe belt installed correct. Do anyone know what a code 42 mean? From what I can tell it is the FUEL TEMP. SENSOR, but can't locate for testing. Part# 14703-10Y00 could this stop the engine from starting? OBD-1 CODES

I' ve never heard of a fuel temp sensor for the J. Are you sure you are getting code 42, but not 43, which mean the throttle position sensor circuit? If the TPS circuit is bad, which you might forgot to plug it in, of course your car won't start.
