CustomJ30, as the previous poster pointed out, there are four drain holes at each corner of the sunroof rail assembly. Unfortunately, you can only get to the front two corner drain holes.
The drain holes are connected to a rubber hose that runs down your A-pillar and out the car. Check for any blockage by pouring water into the corners (sunroof open, preferably with the car parked at a slight incline - nose of the car lower than the rear).
If the water drainage is slow or not draining at all, you found the culprit. A blast of air is a good idea. Be careful sticking anything down the drain tubes because they CAN come undone from the rail assembly. (Don't ask me how I know).
However, make sure you check the obvious (the light bulb that is no longer working). Maybe you just need a new light bulb. I say that b/c I'm having a hard time picturing how water from the sunroof would ever get on top of that light or on the wiring. The wiring for the light runs below the sunroof rail assembly. If water was getting around that area (I doubt it), I'd expect you would have seen water coming in the car.
You also mentioned that you had visible water stains on the liner so it's possible but I'm still trying to picture how water could have gotten on the light (not saying it isnt, just doubtful). It's possible that your water stains were caused by the previous owner leaving the sunroof open or tilted as it rained (unless there's no previous owner).
In any case, if it isn't the light bulb, the damage has to be confined to the plastic assembly for the dome light. You could easily remove it. Take out the plastic clear lens exposing two screws. Once you have it out, you'll be able to see the back of it (where the connections are) and you could check for any corrosion or a loose wiring harness.
I recently had to repair the sunroof on my 95 J30 (broken cables) and got to see how it all works since I had to remove the headliner to get to the sunroof assembly.
Anyway, welcome to Nico. Check out my J30 webpage when you have a chance.
