In response to Mersidoe's request, here are the annual sales of J30 (but not necessarily by model year):

1992 13,7741993 21,4981994 22,7771995 17,8991996 7,5641997 4,5941998 1,783

Total 89,889

I'll let others more knowledgeable about the J30 comment, but it is obvious that is was on a similar track as the Q45 despite later improvements to the J30 in 1995.

Another note of interest, according to the model life cyle chart, there are no 1997 J30 models. And the "Second Generation Model" of the Q45 begins with the 1997 year model. Meanwhile, the "First Genenration Model" of the Q45 begins with the 1989 model.

Likewise, there is no 1997 model for the G20.

Wow. Considering how rare they are (well, to me) I am quite surprised by these numbers.

I think they're pretty rare, too, but the other day on a trip to Monterey, at two points in my trip (opposite sides of town,) but within about ten minutes of each other, I was followed by two other gold J30's just like mine. Maybe they're all hanging out in California.

I see quite a few in both Seattle and Austin. Only recently have sightings of G35 begun to be more frequent than J30.

My first Infiniti experience was a 94 J30T.....a really fine automobile. I always thought it was unique in its design with great handling and performance, more like a four door sports car. Unfortunately one rainy night an SUV lost control on the turnpike knocking me into a retaining wall at about 70mph.The car was totalled but I didn't get a scratch due to the way that car was put together, it absorbed the impact. I really loved that car.The insurance payment got me into my next Infiniti, a 96 Q45 another great car.

We had another member who hydroplaned at 80 mhp into a guard rail. The car flipped several times and he walked away without a scratch. Appartently, the J has the lowest fatality per crash rate of any vehicle ever produced. It's a tank. Insurance rates are pretty high, though.

BTW, there are quite a few Js running around Chicago.

The J used the same foam stuff as the Q. I think it was used to help maintain the structerial integrity of the roof in a crash, or something.

The J is also very heavily built weighing in at 3800 lbs compared to the slightly larger Maxima that comes in at 3400.

The J was ahead of its time being RWD when the fashion of the era was for FWD. Compared to the ES300 (which isn't really a good comparison because the J is in another class but that was its direct competition at the time), the J is completely over engineered which is one reason why the struggling Nissan co. was forced to drop it from the line up. The less than stellar sales sealed the deal. The Max was then dressed up to take on the ES.

The J competed against the original GS300...

I loathed the original GS300.

I see quite a few Js around here in SoCal. I've always liked that car except I'm not too crazy about its backside. Face on, and 3/4 real nice.

I don't see J's that often in the Toronto area or for that matter in Ontario and east of Ontario to the atlantic provinces. If I do see one, its usually green or a shade of brown, a j30 and not a t model. For whatever reason green and brown J's with either tan or grey interiors where popular up here. I have only seen one other j30t black on black like mine up here and that was 6 years ago. My infiniti dealer had told me some time ago, that black interiors on J's had to be custom ordered from the factory for Canadian Infiniti dealers.

Yes - there are quite a few here. I probably see a couple a day besides mine. I wasn't too crazy about the look of the back end either, but with the spoiler, it looks pretty good. I've really bonded with mine since I got it back in February. By far, the G35 is the popular new vehicle on the road in my neck of the woods.

You're right about the G35 being the popular new car. I see at least 7 a day. It's also the car I get as loaner evry time I take my Q in for service. Some times I get the I35.I absolutely love the G. It's like a pitbull, smallish but with a lot of balls.I want to get it for my wife.

RSM = Rancho Santa Margarita

It's in south Orange County - a little southeast of Irvine.

The G35 is huge up here too. You can't go 2-3 blocks without seeing at least one. Recently, I'm seeing more and more G35X's. There are even a handful of G35 based taxi cabs up here. They can be mostly seen in the downtown core or by the airport.

Do you have the I30/I35 sales by year? I'm just curious what they look like.

I'll dig them up and post in another thread. I think the 2001 Press Kit is plain wrong about there not being any 1997 J30. A VIN from one should prove that once it is decoded.

A VIN would prove it but I have read that the 97 received side impact beems and a little gizmo that prevented flooding that occurs on a quick start stop cycle. They exist.

Which maxima are you refering to? 4th gen maximas weigh about 3200lbs.

They also loved to tout how 75% of the parts were recyclable by weight

What happened between 95 and 96? Something must have come out new and taken all the thunder. Because it was building a touch of momentum prior to that.

I still think that they could have kept that car around...I love them J's.

As far as rarity....I was pushing a silver J with black interior...never really saw many in Hamilton when I was there. Or Toronto for that matter. Saw a few black ones, and one white one, but like I said, not often.

G35's are like rabbits...everywhere and multiplying.

Have a black on black "94J30t. Great car. Only problem I have is the ash tray door has popped open and will not stay closed. Dealer says it can't be repaired, but comes as one piece with the entire wood grain unit, over $400. Anybody out there have similar problems with there ash trays. The thing is I don't even smoke, so the door for the ashtray was never used. Any suggestions.

Only white J I have ever seen was when I briefly lived and worked in Iowa.

If you check on ebay, you can often find the entire wood grain unit for sale. (They call it a bezel) It usually comes with the ashtray included.

Here's one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...=WDVW

When my radio went out, I became an expert in removing and replacing the bezel. (Search the threads for Bose stereo repair, or check out Carlos's fuzzycats site.)

before I bought the Q for dad, I was pushing the J. Couldn't get him to bite though. But, from the research I did looking for a J, I would contend that there are both MY 1997 and 1997.5 J's my logic is this: starting in MY 1993 [PM code in VIN], the last 6 digits started with 0xxxxx.MY 1994 [..RM...1xxxxx]MY1995 [....SM...2xxxxx]MY 1996 [TM...3xxxxx]MY 1997 [VM...4xxxxx]MY 1997.5? [...VM...5xxxxx]

As for the G35....I got mine the week they came out. went 3 blissful weeks without seeing another one. now they are dime/doz. [well not literally....]
