My mechanic said I needed the tie rod needs replacement and showed me how worn the bushings/spacers were (visible cracks). I was just wondering if the tie rods are the same things as the tension rods. Also, I would like to know from anybody who have had these replaced how the drive feels after replacement. I have yet to get them replaced and the ride in my 1996 J30t is kinda bouncy. The J also likes to dip when braking. I'm wondering if the rods may help with this or my shocks may have just gone soft over the years. Any recommendations to help with the ride are welcome.

On another note regarding the rods, my mechanic told me that it is because the spacers/bushings have been worn that I get a "metal crunching" noise when I brake hard. I've only gotten this noise twice. Once when I was kinda braking hard through a turn and also when I braked hard going straight (the car dipped also). Sometimes I get a faint noise when braking. It happens a few time when I'm not braking hard. It's hard to describe the sound (maybe like a "tumbling" sound - not sure). But that sound happens very few times or is really faint so I can only hear it under certain situations. I would just like to see if anyone here had similar problems or can shed some light on the issue. Any help or opinions is greatly appreciated.

Your mechanic is absolutley right. New tension rods (cheap) and new struts (expensive) are needed. Results will be gratifying. Mileage on your J?

Old but not a lot of miles. Just under 45k right now. It was my dad's car for about five years and probably did no more than 15 miles per day (to and from work). Initially bought it with 6k (I think) as a demo from dealer. I started driving it since 36k for a little over a year. Primarily to school and back but I've done more driving than my dad. Suspension is just going bad due to time and VERY BAD road conditions in Houston. I believe a small hole in the road develops every second in Houston. The hole just gets worst over a course of a few weeks and the city would finally decide to fill up the hole. But of course, the filler just goes bad too.

Same situation on "Q2" - low miles but rubber parts continue to deteriorate no matter what... I have all the parts ready for a complete suspension rebuild - now all I need is TIME!
