Hello Everyone,

I just had my receiver/dryer changed, the system vacuumed, and new refrigerant added today. I don't know for sure if the PAG oil was changed. Now the car has less cooling, even when set to 8 to 10 degrees cooler than I used to set it. There is also a new sound in the fan. Any ideas of what is going on? Thanks in advance.

Chris

P.S. The car is a 1997 J30t with 54,000 miles. I live along the southeast atlantic coast. The receiver dryer came from Scottsdale.

You would know if the oil had been changed because every part would have had to be removed to flush the oil out completely. The dryer only holds 0.2 ounces and at most 0.4 ounces gets removed with a vacuum down. Now R134a is very very very sensitive to exact charge weight......an error of 10% is significant.

If I remember correctly, the FSM instructs that the oil should be carefully measured/weighed from the recycler, the component replaced and an additional amount from the vacuum process. An identical amount should be replaced. Under-cooling is usually the result of too much oil in the system. Too little oil and the compressor will burn-up.

How was the receiver/dryer diagnosed as a component that needed to be replaced vs. the compressor, etc...?

Hello,

I decided to change the receiver/dryer as part of routine maintenance, since the car is almost seven years old. I was under the impression that changing this part might extend the life of the A/C system. There was nothing obviously amiss in the system until the work was done. In general, I have had good experiences with this shop, so I have some confidence that they will put things in order.

They should have measured the recovered oil like VenCounty says. Pretty much every recovery/recharge machine has a feature for doing so. It's the only way to keep the oil filled properly without starting from 0. You can have them do it again if they agree, or you can try a DIY recharge of a couple ounces at a time to see if things get any better. If it gets worse then it's probably overcharged.

Members will remember that adding 2.5 ounces of oil lowered the vent temperature by 3-4F on my Q. When I added another 1.5 ounces the temp went back up. So there is a fine line is finding the correct amount of oil. [-30%----x--- +20%] out of 7.75 ounces totalNow I will have to vacuum down ]recharge the system 3-4 times to get it back to the correct amount!

My first calculation [guess] was right but I love to experiment [and pay for the consequences].

Thanks. My technican says the ECU is not working properly, so that the auxiliary fan is not coming on. Is there any disadvantage to waiting until next spring to fix it? My manual is still with the car, which is still at the shop.

I'll bet the ecu is fine, it controls a relay or the fan motor or connections or some of the pressure/temp sensors or their connections.

If it worked perfectly before the service and doesn't work afterwards whose at fault.......
