What type of problem areas does one face when buying a J30. I'm thinking of buying a 93Q or 95-97 J30t. Hopefully I can find a new enough 93Q to avoid the chain guides. Does the J30 have red lights like the 1st gen Q's guides and transmission?

As you can see the J30 is practically bullet proof. transmission maintenance is the only issue. Some of the earlier gremlins were ironed out in the later models.

How about a 90 Q with chain guides replaced 50K ago? :) :)

Q1 will be for sale in a month or so...

Heath Ol' Buddy, you have been singing that song for quite sometime now and my corns hurt from Moon Walking to it. How is the body of your Q (cause I know the mechanics are tight)?

Other than a timing belt and EGR tubes which plug up, the injector harness and knock sensors and crank angle sensor and VVT solenoids nothing breaks if you change the oil regularly on the engine.

Typical injector fouling and dual throttle body/pcv gunk! The R04R01A is just a lighter duty version of the Q transmission as such it sufferes the same problems with heat and filter/cooler clogging.

Look at the 300zx sites for problems and solutions as stated the 96-97 J30 were the most trouble free.

non motor wise there's the bose amp problem with cracking and popping but that was in both the Q and J so no escaping that.Worn out drivers door from arm resting. and sunroof seems to fail. oh yeah, the satanic possesed auto-locking thing and expensive suspension work. keep in mind i've only experienced the locking thing myself. and i do the suspension work myself so that saves my hundreds.

I know what you mean... but I really mean it this time!!! :) Body is in excellent condition. Never wrecked or any paint work. Some typical interior leather cracking, but no holes or rips like you see in some of those eBay auctions. The car was buffed at some point before I bought it in 1996 - and they "burnt" the clear coat in a couple of spots - but they aren't noticeable with a good coat of wax and haven't gotten any worse over the last 6 years. Rear bumper cover is starting to fade ever-so-slightly on the top side...

Like you said - mechanicals are tip-top. Updated guides at 120K due to guide failure... one slightly bent valve, but everything was fine after it was replaced, Transmission at 110K or 115K, Knock Sensors and Injectors at 110K, ABS Pump a couple of years ago, Motor mounts and Turbine Rev. Sensor about 1 year ago, Shocks/bushings/rack mounts/sway bar bushings and end links/ tie rod ends replaced about 18 months ago, transmission mounts, PCV hoses, Plenum hoses, etc, etc...

I wouldn't count on that.... only reliable way to tell is to pull the front cover.

No fun paying $6-10K for a car and then the engine needs a $6K+ replacement/rebuild.

VIN #s don't really tell you which engine out of thousands of engines made -- probably sitting around in the factory for months -- goes in the car.
