J30 Q's I have just joined the forum and am exited to have finally found you all. I have a 96 J30 and am getting ready to do some work. Any tips or heads up on the problems about to be addressed would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

1) Brake Pads and Rotor replacement

2) Popping from front steering. Not sure if I need to replace whole Rack & Pinion or not.

3) transmission issues.....car stalls out SOMETIMES when making sudden stops from slow speeds.

4) Torn boots on front suspension

The same exact thing happened to me in my J. Not long after, my transmission went out on me. I had to get it rebuilt.

Your basically running on a bonus, atleast from my experience. I dont mean to scare you or anything, but that is what happened to me.

Good luck...

This is what I figured....I am running on bonus time. I guess I will just drive it until it fails. That is unless someone hear can recomend a way to bring the transmission back from the dead....any suggestions?

Do a search for "transmission flush" - it'll either kill it or help... it all depends on the prior owner's maintenence habits. Welcome to NICO!!

-Timing belt must be replaced @ 105k miles on a 96. Do a search for that and you will learn of the other things that can be done at the same time. Do this ASAP otherwise major engine damage will result.

- Popping? Could be any number of things but I'd guess tie rods and/or bump stops.

- transmission pan drop and filter change and check to make sure the transmission cooler isn't clogged. The damage may have already been done, however.

- Don't worry about the boots. Replace them when you bet new struts. This isn't cheap but good deals can be found on parts using our sponsors. Everything Infiniti is great.

You don't mention your mileage but I'd guess you have at least 120k.

Welcome to the club.

176000 miles :) Second Transmission & Second Engine

I inherited the car from my old man who does not take care of things very well. He replaced it with a 02 CLK430 Convertible...he seems to be taking better care of this one (Thank God).

Sounds like I have a lot of work ahead of me....time to get this sucker back in tip top.

I would say that you have $4k to get your J back in tip top shape. The J is a heavy car and we have noticed that Js in the south use trannies fast. Get a transmission cooler.

Second engine? If you do regular maintenance that engine should run forever! It's probably one of the most reliable motors ever made. How many miles on the current one and how many miles on the orginal when it failed?
