I have a 95 J30 with 267,000 miles and have had a problem with the oil dipstick popping up and oil spraying out. I ordered two PCV valves. At risk of sounding like a dumb ***. Where are these located on the engine and how do I access them to replace?

I don't have my service manual in front of me right now so I can't help you presently with the location of the PCV valves....

But WOW!!! 267k miles!!!!!!!!!!!! That has got to be the highest mileage J30 in this club. (Welcome BTW. ) Are you still on your first transmission? What maintenance have you done over the years.

You'll enjoy this club. Tons of great reading here.

Yeah, it's a big pain. Have you replaced yours Eswift? I was thinking about doing mine when replacing the injectors but I didn't have to pull the upper manifold off like I thought I would so I just left them.

nope, i've put it off too, its been a while now since my last injector failure ...(knock on real burl walnut dash trim)

probably not worth doing without removing the plenum as you suggest, the engive is even closer to the firewall in the J30.

Eswift, This web address you listed, http://www.ttzd.com/tech/pcvtech.html, how accurate would this be for a EGR replacement? My 94 J30 with 118K miles check engine comes on and off and the dealer states that the EGR tubing is clogged and that they would be more than happy to fix it for $800. They say that the transmission must be pulled to get to the EGR tubes.

your J30 comes on and off, you mean the CEL comes on and off?

the egr tubes may very well be a pain to get to, i know they go pretty low, although i think it is more common for the valve itself to fail.

you can do the test of the valve yourself,

Sounds about right for dealer, an independent might be able to save you a few bucks on labor..............usually happens at higher mileage but your driving style may be a factor in early clogging.

If you bring it down to T3 Atlanta we can PROBABLY clean them without pulling the transmission. We have a type of homemade EGR roto router with 3 differing diameter cutters driven by a drill...........cost $310........4 hours labor plus cleaning solution..............works 98% of the time.

About 3 hours each way, perfect timing, and you'll only be gone 12 hours. plus $27 of gasoline.

How can I reach you to set up an appointment? I am not sure when I can do it, but hopefully soon. $310 is better than $800.
