What kind of engine noise do you have transfer to your passenger compartments?

I have an irritating engine noise in the passenger compartment. Sounds like the distortion you get from an ungrounded speaker a high pitch kind of hum. It is definately coming from the engine bay.

Maybe this is normal, and I never noticed it b/c of the radio, but I think a car this well insulated would not have such a transfer.

Another question while on the subject: is ther supposed to be a ticking sound from the cylinder banks? valve slapping?

What do you mean by passenger compartment? Passenger seat up front, rear seat, trunk?

either way neither of your sounds are normal. the ticking sound could be a couple things. valve slapping like you mentioned, coil packs or fuel injectors. you're going to have to concentrate to determine which it is.

Is it happening at certian speeds? Does it start out at one frequency and go to a higher pitch frequency?

I am fighting my own battle of such and maybe something I have done can help

the humming sound is coming through the firewall into the passenger compartment. Can hear in the whole copartmet but primarily the driver and passenger. It varies with the speed of the engine, i.e. higher pitched at higher RPMs.

the tick can be heard at idle from under the hood, not in the car. if you open the throttle while under the hood it is inaudible b/c of the engine noise (or b/c its not there?)

is there a shield under the headers? I have another vibration at around 1500-2000RPM in the area of the fan shroud that sounded like a heat shield. But it is not the same as the others I described

Can you explain why you think it might be the injectors Mayhem? And what about them.

I haven't experienced any performance issues except for a loss in gas milage - but I think that is due to all the city driving since moving to DC

stumped.does it sound choppy like helicopter.j30s are the noisiest car under the hood ive ever own.damn,my 73 c10 chevy pickup was way quiter as far as engine compartment noise.i bought a machanics stethascope.and some brake line tubing to help find all the sounds, really helps.i hate the egr tube noise, and the buzzs fron the exhaust heat shields.i took off heat sheilds after several attemps at making them quite.no buzzing whatsoever up to 7000 rpm.i also took header wrap and wrapped the egr tube.no tube noise at all now.all heat shields under the car are visiolasticed.sorry bout long post.its my expierence that that with these cars and others the quiter it gets more sounds will appear thqat where masked by the previous noise.

the injectors make a clicking ticking sound as they work. if you can only hear it when you lift the hood that's probably what it is so no biggie.
