Okay, I feel really stupid asking this question. But here goes. Where is the oil filter located on my 93 J30. I swear, I cannot find it. Never ever had this prob on any other car. Do I need to lift the car to see/access it?

You bet it has one, I had the same problem when I tried to replace oil and filter the first time on my J30.

To get to it you have to raise the passanger side front wheel and reach up using a filter removal tool to take it out.

To avoid making a mess place lots of scrap cloth under the filter when removing to catch the oil.

easy if the car is up on ramps, just slide in next to the passenger front wheel, tilt your head back and it will be there....unfortunately, its always a mess.

as tech said, rags everywhere are a must.

Ramps? I just reach down from above. Put a towel over the manifold to kept from getting burned and wear a long sleeve shirt to reduce forearm scratches. I use one of those oil filter "sockets" that attaches to a rachet. I put a piece of paper towel in the thing now to tighten it's grip because it slips a bit. If the remover gets jammed on to the filter I just remove the rachet and take the filter off with it still on. A rag in your hand to handle the hot filter is also a good idea.

I suppose it does take a bit of a learning curve because you're doing everything by feel. One time I could not find the the screw stem to put the new filter on for half an hour! I thought I was going crazy.

This technique is not too messy at all. Just make sure that the pan used for catching the old oil is directly under the filter. Remove the filter with the holes up and bob's your uncle.

I thought the filter was in that location from the diagram I have. I think I'll lift the car to get to the filter. I tried finding the thing when the car was cold. No go. One must need long/thin arms to reach from above.

I dunno about having to have skinney arms. I am 5'11" fairly athletic and wiegh about 190 lbs. The oil filter comes out with room to spare. You just have to know what you're reaching for (she said :D ).

The filter is closer to the firewall than the front on the back third of the engine. It is tricky if you don't know the location (she said yet again :D ) because you can't see it.

VimyJ, I don't mean to bash your technique if it works for you great. But I would rather see what I am removing and how I am removing it. All it takes is a few minutes to jack the passenger side up and besides I can do a good visual inspection while I am under there. Any way you look at it you still have to get under the car to drain the oil sump.Cheers

Since starting this thread, I have had my oil changed at a shop because of the hassle of lifting the car to get to the filter.

BUT, now I have done it myself. I tell you, it was extremely hard to get the filter off. The filter wrench I had said it would fit that filter (got it from Kragen). But all it would do is slip around. I had finally gotten so fed up with it that I adhered some super glue to the filter to get a good grip. It came off just fine after that! Needless to say, I don't have that wrench anymore.

Okay, so long story, short question. What tool do you guys use to remove your oil filter? Where did you get it? I'm tired of these cheap plastic tools that most stores sell now.

a dry rag and kung-fu grip.

but seriously, If you can't get it off with your bare hands, its most likely been put on too tight.

Adjustable ones are the best...use 'em on any filter. But I agree with Eswift--if you can't undo by hand, probably too tight.

If I snugged the filter up a little too tight, I use my oil socket thingy. It slips like crazy so I put a rag or paper towel over it to get a bit of purchase and Bob's your uncle, off it comes. Got the from the top technique down pat.

Yeah, I tried those techniques. They didn't work. The car was cool enough too. Tightening too much can be a problem when someone you pay someone else to do the turning. Hopefully, now that I've replaced the filter myself, I wont have that problem. I still want a tool incase - esp if the car is hot enough and I'm short on time to wait.

Thanks for the link to ebay. I still prefer the tool that fits on the end of a rachet.
