Sounds like something within the instrument cluster has broken. Sometimes if you press the odometer reset button while the car is moving, the odometer mechanism can break.

Of course I don't know if that's the case with yours but since the spedo is working, obviously it's not the cable.

I've expereinced this problem to when my odometer turned 100K. First I had problems with the trip odometer freezing internittently and than one day my entire odometer froze. Infiniti dealer replaced entire J30 cluster and charged me only for the labour. He told me it is somewhat common on 93 & 94 models. It has something to do with the extremes in temperature up here in Canada (Freezing cold winters and extremely hot summers).

Figueroa, that's a good question. I didn't even think of that when I read that post.

I'm assuming that there are probably some laws (which vary from state to state) regarding this.

Would the dealer adjust the new odometer to match the old? There's also the issue of selling the car in the future if the odometer doesn't really reflect the true mileage (if the new odometer was not adjusted in any way). I think in GA you have to sign something in the back of the title that states the "true" mileage of the car when you sell it. Don't remember exactly though.

Good point, nonetheless.

My dealer did not adjust the odometer to match the old. However he did impress upon the metal plate (plate in the Engine compartment that Infiniti dealers are supposed to data for your last timing belt change) that the odometer had been changed and the original mileage on the car was so many kilometers when the change occured.

They also noted the VIN and sent it to Nissan Canada, which in turn informs the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the province that the Odometer has been changed at a certain kilometer.

All this information is rolled into a package which must be presented to a potential buyer when selling your vehicle. If you don't disclose this, you can end up in a pile of legal trouble. Also the Ministry of Transportation here discloses this information to a "new owner" when he or she registers the vehicle. So in a nutshell one way or another a potential new owner is going to find out. In the past individuals and dealers up here have been succesfully prosecuted for knowingly (and unknowingly) selling vehicles with new odometers with "fradaulent" miles.

My odometer started failing a few months ago. It seemed to start with the trip odometer, but eventually the regular odometer also failed. I have seen the odometer on eBay for about $200. Is it likely that I just need to buy this and replace it?

From reading this thread it sounds like a failing odometrs is a common problem. There's about 30-40 J30 instrument clusters for sale on ebay in the $30-$70 range. It would be a lot easier to replace the entire cluster rather than just the odometer assembly.
