Please read new updates.I really need some help here! I have a 1995 j30 - 176,000 miles on it. I have put the last 76,000 on it. Has been a great car -- about 4 months ago the check engine light came on..... of course I continued to drive it! Now it will not crank. I pulled the codes off the ecm – it was 55 – with means nothing found – I left the door open and drained the battery for about 5 days. Could it be that whatever code was storied was lost because of complete power loss for 5 days?

let me describe to you want the car is doing. After sitting for a day or two – it will start and run for about 5 to 10 seconds – there is a squeal from the engine – it has Been doing that for about 3 months – I’m sure it is just a belt – but other than the squeal – the motor will run just fine. While it is running if I apply gas it will kill the engine, otherwise if I allow it to run without touching the gas pedal it runs fine. At that time, the more I spin the motor over the less the car will start and run. After about 3 or 4 times it will only run for about 3-5 seconds.I then installed new spark plugs - no changei then installed a new fuel filter - no changei then installed a new fuel pump no help oh yes - I think the timing belt needs to be replaced - but because it is running for a very seconds.... could that be it? Please please email mail me back with your suggestion! [email protected]

I really need to fix this car without taking it to the repair shop - i just lost my job and need to save money, so if anyone has some suggestions I would greatly appreciate them!thanks Fred shepherd - cell # 256-658-9149how about other web sites i can visit to help? thanks again!

fred, are you saying it stalls ONLY if you hit the gas or it will stall if you hit the gas but if you don't it'll stall anyway?I'm guessing the check engine light went away before you pulled the code correct? It's my understanding that you can only get old codes from the Nissan Consult. The CEL will have to be active for you to pull it manually at home.

That's not the case with the Q; old codes are stored for 50 start cycles. A dead battery will clear the memory though. Not sure what to say here, but if the CEL comes on again, you'll need to access the codes once more. If the motor is running fine (albeit for short periods only), then I don't think it's the timing belt that's causing the problem. How does the exhaust look? When it stalls, how does it stall? All of a sudden, or does it slow down gradually? Can you measure the fuel pressure?

thanks for the quick reply!

it will start for the 6-10 seconds and run smooth. it is almost like the cars fuel pump is shut off and then the car starves for fuel and finally goes daed. i'm going to go buy a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure before and after the car starts.I hear the new pump kick on then pressurize the line before it starts. but , it could be that something triggers the pump or pump relay to shut off.

please i encourage others to write me back with your "best guess" or suggestions! fred

reply #2 - "When it stalls, how does it stall? All of a sudden, or does it slow down gradually? Can you measure the fuel pressure?" -

fred - it is all of sudden - not gradually- but at any time i hit the gas pedal it will die.

HEY GUYS- WHAT ABOUT THE FUEL INJECTORS? i hAD A corvette once that did this........ i had one injector bad and it kept the car from starting. it triggered the ecm not to start because ofthe bad injector.how i found the bad injector, i used my digital ohm meter checked the resistance in each injector - i found the one that was measuring higher, I replaced it then it started.... what do yu think? thanks fred

Injectors are one of several suspects--part of the reason I asked about the exhaust earlier. But some clues tell me that the injectors aren't the problem. If the injectors were bad, I don't think the car would run smoothly at all for any amount of time.
