Hi:

I recently discouver a noise ocming from the intake cam on the passenger side.

The frequency of the noise is low. It does NOT sound like something screaming or squeeking. It sounds like "brake judder" but coming from the intake cam area on the passenger side.

The noise only occurs when the transmission is in D, R, 3, 2, 1 and the noise increases with engine speed. The is no noise at all when the transmission is in N or P.

I actually opened up the oil filler cover to check the intake cam. The noise is synchronized with the cam position.

I am totally out of idea. Any help will be so much appreciated.

Hi:

About the noise. You can actually feel there is vibration in synchronization with the noise. The vibration is strong enough that you can feel it on the timing belt cover.

I forgot to mention so some history of my J30

1) 1993. About 75Kminles.2) I just got the timing belt done.3) had problem with MAF about turned out that the MAF is fine. The problem came from the fact that I forgot to reconnect the TPS connector after cleaning.4) Before timing belt replacement, the noise was there, but not that loud. NOw it is two times louder.

Hi:

After some cheking up, I highly suspecting that there is something wrong with varaible valve timing.

I remember Q45Tech mentioned that VVT valves on J30 go out pretty easily with abuse. I wonder which VVT valve Q45Tech was talking about. Was it the solenoid valve ot the actual OIL valve inside the intake cam.

Anyways, please let me know what you think about the problem with my J30.

Hi:

Update on my findings:

1) The noise only occurs after the car is FULLY warmed up.2) IF I increase engine speed above 1000rpm while in D, R, 3, 2, 1, there is a loud clicking from the intake cams (both passenger and driver sides)

I heard it is very likely that the VVT solenoid is bad. Please let me know your thoughts. Also, what will be involved in replacing the solenoids? Can I just remove them from the back of the engine and put new ones in? Or Do I have to take off intake manifolds and stuff to change the actual OIL VALVE IN THE INTAKE CAM as well.

I strongly suspect its your engine solenoid. Mine got louder with time, especially after the car was warmed up.

but, to be sure. check your codes to make sure its not something else.
