Car: should be obvious enough

today i started up my J30, instantly it was running roughly, and the check engine light came on. I checked the error code on the ECU and it said 51, which i believe is an open circuit in the injector circuit. I started it a few hours later and it started up fine, and there was no check engine light? what gives? should i have it looked at? thanks in advance.

My 91 Q has done the same thing a few times over the last year. The light would go off after a minute or so of driving, but I suspect your injectors are starting to fail. Replaced one bad injector on my Q with a boneyard injector and it solved the problem. Check for very low resistance in the injector circuit. Go Bears!!

thanks doug, what is a "boneyard" injector? is that one from a totaled Q, or is it a manufacturer? sorry if thats a stupid question! I have an extended warranty expiring soon, if i take the J30 there, do you think they can find the problem injector and replace it, or will i pay 100 bucks because they cant find anything to fix? thanks for your help! go bears go haha!

"Engine Code 51: The injector circuit is open or shorted." Could this be related to the white smoke you've been noticing lately?

quite possibly...its likely that theres an injector on the way out or leaking, and its causing all these problems upon startup. im gonna check the injectors. thanks for the input all.

Yes, a "boneyard " is the junkyard for a wrecked Q. Used injectors are only $45 and if it is in an easy to locate hole, you can change one in about 20 minutes!!

Since you are under warranty, definately have the dealer run a consult. They can tell you the resistance on each of the injectors--and they should replace the ones that are out of spec!!!

Had big puffs of white smoke once when the injector nozzle was cracked dumping lots of gas into the cylinder. Could again be tied to you problem.
