I have 1 94 J30 w/125K. Just bought it (clean carfax). I live in Las Vegas. It takes 5 to 7 seconds of cranking to start the car when cold. Restarts within an hour or so start instantly. What is my problem? Thanks.

When's the last time you changed the plugs? How does the car run?

Is it a cranking sound or kind of like scraping sound mixed in with the cranking? If that's the case it could be the flywheel that needs replacing. Fairly common on the J's.

Just acquired, so don't know. Are the plugs easy enough to replace? Unlike every other car I've owned, I can't see the plugs! Car has a slight vibration when idling, other than that it runs well.

No sound other than normal cranking. Question: don't have an owner's manual yet (on order): does the maual say use gas or don't use gas when starting?

Most likely your base idle has to be reset. Nothing big, most Infiniti dealers will do it for free or for a nominal charge.

Since you are a new J owner I would recommend that you get your transmission flushed if it hasn't been already(run a search for J30 tranmission thread to see what's involved) and also invest in a transmission cooler. The transmission on the J's especially one that reside in warmer climates don't last long.

While you wait for the one you ordered, you can view the '96 or '97 manuals at http://www.infiniti-techinfo.com (check the drop down menu when you hover over the "publications" tab at the top of the screen) and save a copy of it as a .pdf too. Throttle shouldn't be necessary, but Infiniti does recommend it, especially on cold starts (found in a later TSB, probably not in the owner's manual).

Welcome to NICO!
