Yesterday I was driving on the Major Deegan and all of a sudden there was major traffic. Flood waters had caused traffic to move extremely slow. I had to sit in about 1.5 feet of water until I could get off at the next exit. I heard a glugging sound at one point, but afterwards she drove very nicely for about a half hour more until I got home.

Today I start her up and first of all I had to hold down the gas to get her to turn. Then she was shaking pretty violently and put a lot of smoke out the tailpipe. In the car I smelt heavy fumes of rich gasoline. She backfired a few times and made nasty noise of puttering. I went for 2 minutes then shut her off. When I restarted, it seemed to sound fine until the temp of the engine warmed up to to minimum level.

Even though it vibrates violently and spits out smoke, RPMs are pretty steady at 900.

Hopefully you don't have too much bad news for me...

Welcome to NICO!!!

You probably got some water in your tailpipe.

The stock air intake box is up higher so I would doubt, the engine would "drink" water and get hydro-locked (that's as long as the stock air box hasn't been modified).

I'm assuming you don't have leaks or holes around the engine and/or drivetrain that may allow water to seep in.

I would run the car and let any water remaining in the tail pipe evaporate.

I wouldn't start and shut-off the car after running the engine for only two minutes. J30's are notorious for engine flooding.

Let her warm up for at least 15-20 minutes before shutting her off.

Thanks for your suggestions apu

No holes in engine/drive train, except for a small slow leak in the crank case. Warmed her up for about 30 minutes, smoke seemed to clear up, and vibrations settled down.

However RPM fluctuation has increased.

Good signs?

Will try again tommorow.

You probably got a bit moisture in your air box or MAF from the spray if the vehicle in front of you.

Most RPM related issues in the J are directly related to the MAF(sensor directly behind air box).

I guess it took a couple of days for it to dry off.
