OK,

My j30 just rolled over 128K miles and I did a fresh valve job on it after the timng belt jumped due to the drivers side (left camshaft) seized. I am doing some short road trips mostly lately and seem to be getting 21.6 mpg.How are you guys doing?? It drops to about 19 if pure around town. I'm pretty easy on it around town but on the highway it is 80-90 normally crusie mode.

Your city mileage sounds about right, if not high-ish, but most people get around 24 mpg or so...... however, 22 doesnt sound too bad considering the speed in which you choose to travel

I think you could probably replace the o2 sensors and regain that last 2mpg, theyll be about $100 for the pair from sparkplugs.com (a NICO sponsor)

Here we go again with the 4.36 gearing!

I need more info! Quicker pickup, 24+ MPG on the highway - sounds to good to be true!

What car did it come off of, do you know anything about their origin?

Was it a direct fit, fabrication required, etc?

Thanks!

I just put a full tank of gas in - and ran it empty...

Ordering new O2 sensors, and putting the BG kit to use - what else can I do?

So diamond,

did you recalibrate your speeometer/odometer to your new rear end ratio? How?? It might just be that your are showing more miels than you actually traveled, hence your fuel mileage appears to be improved. What rpm are you turning at 80 mph for example?? I'm sure you get to 80 mphg much faster than the rest of us though.

Best Regards,Wayne Hyde

Yeah, lets all go EXACTLY 80MPH, and see what RPM we are at! That'll let us know if we're on the same page or not!

Good idea, today on the highway after work, I'll report back results!

cant find anyone to calibrate.im correct in my totals.pretty simple, even i can figure it out, lol.im at 3200 at 70-75.i forget.lol.got to remember though,my car does not shift all over the place in overdrive like a normal one.not even close.you get to speed it holds it firm.gives the car way better power to climb.closer to the zone.hehe.top speed only 123 but how often you need the extra ten.lol.i like flying around mountain roads.a racer it is not.funny thing is you can tell the ecu is set richer .whole different exhaust note just idling.deeper.thicker,richer,lol.

I'm getting better than that!

Hi, new member here. I bought our '97 J30 earlier this year for my wife to drive. I've been reading the forum for a month, beginning when I needed to find a shop for a new timing belt and I wanted to know the scoop first.

Recently started a new job where my daily drive is about 110 mi round trip, all freeway and now I'm driving the J30. Keeping the speed at 65 - 75 I am getting 24.5-26 MPG! I watch the AC use (50% of less) but 50% of the drive is hilly, so it's not a flat or straight drive. I've been measuring this for 2 months, before and after the timing belt, water pump, belts, & seals along with major service (plugs, AT fluid, etc.).

I miss my 2000 A4 Quattro 2.8 5sp but I am very impressed with the J30 interior design, overall solidness, quietness of ride, and availability of power. We plan on keeping it for quite a while. Based on the mileage I'm getting sounds like I found a nice J30 and I'm pleased.
