Hey all, well after changing timing belt, tensioner, water pump, termostat, all hoses, and an injector. I'm faced with the prospect of spending even more money.

I just came back from the smog check place, and the car failed badly. I remember 2 years back when I smogged it, I was below the Max values for HC, CO, and NO.

Can anyone recommend steps I can take (preferably not to costly) to get it to pass smog. I know there are a lot of illegal avenues, however I do care about the enviornment and I I'm sure based on the CO measurements that I'm burning too much gas ($3.44/Gallon) so I wanna bring her back into optimum range. I am going to include the Test Results, perhaps they help indicate where the problem is.

Thanks in advance,Mike

is there any DIY way to determine if the emission is being caused by the engine/components (spark plugs, egr, etc), or if its being caused by the exhaust system (ie: cats, o2 sensor, mufflers, etc).

Can anyone else comment. I just bought NGK BKR5E-11 spark plugs ( i couldnt afford OEM), im gonna swap em out now, see if it makes the engine run any difference.

also check the functioning of the EGR valve...wes, can you describe the test? I think while idling you press it from underneath and the car should shut off or stumble, if it doesnt it means the EGR valve is clogged.

That's why smog threads are state specific. We all know Alabama has no emissions mandates. Alabama is really nice, but IMHO it's too slow paced for me.

But due to prevailing winds all the Alabama air/weather ends up in Georgia.

But fair is fair so we send you the Chattahochee River......I'll breath you drink.

Can a possible vacuum leak be causing these high numbers? I'm suspecting that perhaps there is a leak when i put the manifold back together, perhaps a hose is loose and it missed my numerous safety checks.

Also where is the EGR valve located? and can this be the sole cause of all the numbers being off? Also can it be cleaned/repaired? or is replacement the only option?

thx again in advance, I really need to solve this and pass smog, I havent driven the J in over 2 months and I really miss her.

the egr is at the back center of the engine back by the firewall. On both sides of the engine, where the intake manifolds are , you will see a small pipe going down a few inches and then going back towards the fire wall . They will go to the EGR .In my case the pipes were clogged where they attach to the intake. But like I said earlier my condition set the check engine light off.Usually when I got up to about 50 on the highway . Not at startup. Both pipes were clogged up tight .Got the crud out and havent had a prob since .

I believe the test to see if the EGR valve is closed is while the engine is running...put your finger under the EGR valve..there is a manifold inside the EGR valve, when you press up on it and push the manifold up, the engine should still rev...if it dies out, its clogged.

Wrong. When you push the diaphragm inside the EGR valve, the engine should choke and wanted to stall, release the diaphragm and the idle should smooth out. If doing this changes the idle little or none, then something is clogged.

Run smog searches on NICO... there you'll find all the answers....

hey all I'm gonna invest in changing the O2 sensors and see where that leaves me. I found universal sensors and I', curious if i can use these, instead of the OEM which are 80 bucks each. These that I found ( http://www.partstrain.com/prod...-2000 ) for 22 bucks each. Now do i need the 1 wire or 2 wire? also is it gonna be easy changing these. If someone can provide some insight into the location (maybe a drawing or a diagram) and technique (ie: gotta go from under the car or if they can be accessed some other way. I figured even if its not the oxygen sensors, Replacing them should better my fuel economy? is this correct, considering they havent been changed in almost 14 years.

My neighbor looked at the car, and said that it's running to rich, and he said a faulty oxygen sensor will more likely be the cause of it rather then an egr valve (is this correct?) Also I placed my hand over the exhaust today and i could smell a hint of gasoline (kinda as if it hasnt fully burned) and there was a bit of water and steam coming from the exhaust (enough to make my hand moist). is this normal???

I want you guys to know i really appreciate all the help, and I'm thankful for all the info/advice being provided. Once again thx in advance for all the help.

We have two oxygen sensors on our car, they are srewed on the exhaust pipe after the exhaust manifold(one on each side), look for them between the firewall and the engine, above the transmission. I have the three wires coming out of the sensor, so should yours. In order to change them you need a oxygen sensor socket, which cost ~$10 in any auto part store.
