I was just wondering since the J30 ranged from 93-97 are the engine ECUs on them all the same or are they different accross the years?

93-95 should be cross compatible and 96-97 should be compatible

In the USA there was a change from OBD1 (OBD = On Board Diagnostics) to OBDII in most Nissans for the 1996 model year. The OBDII system monitors the emissions and engine control sensors with far greater accuracy than the old OBDI system. Even a loose gas cap can set off the "check engine" light with OBDII. The 96-97 ECU would probably be looking for sensor inputs that don't even exist on a 1993.

Do you have an ECU problem?

yeah the pins corroded and no power to cylinder #2 and #6 so i ordered one from a salvage yard thru the mechanics.they want $450 CAD and i paid a deposit of $50 but am only gonna pay the rest and install it on friday.

but i ended up finding many all around canada from car-part.com and they are anywhere from $150CAD to - $225CAD so i was wondering if i should pay the rest of the $400 and get it from the mechanics who ordered it in or tell them how it is and try to pay less for it OR get my own and install it.

any suggestions?

I would check with a dealer, but I think our ECU's are cross compatible. Canada was one of the first industrilaized countries to force manufacturers to install emission engine control sensors for all new vehicles sold here. In my '94, if I don't lock the gas cap properly, my check engine light goes off.

There is a reason why the pins corroded. Higher resistance in circuit..poor connectivity..short, faulty harness..etc. Your ecu can be opened up and checked. You might actually be able to repair it. The problem might reoccur with a replacement ECU.. Working with nissans for the past 10 years, the ECU is usually the last thing to go...extremely rare..even nissan mentions it in the FSM and TSB's.. Regardless..good luck

i wanted to open it up as well but the problem is if it is corroded the circuitry might just start dropping off.i will open it once i get the new ECU.

got the new ECU. from another 93 J30.apparently the J30 ECUs are very specific.almost every year has a different one.for the 93 the only ones usable on my car anyway are ones from 5/93 to 7/93.

anyway she running beautifully again.

i have another question tho.....is there a fuse that control the low fuel indicator?cause i have never seen mine come on in all the 7 months i've owned the cars even when she's running pretty dry unless the J30 has a massive reserve tank.

The low fuel thing is controlled by a seperate switch on the sending unit... Simple to replace if you can get the part without having to buy the whole sending unit....

Could just be a bad connection... I get a random low fuel warning sometimes too for whatever reason.....

The sending unit is in the gas tank. If it's a dedicated wire, get the wire color out of the FSM so you can continuity-check the bulb via the harness before removing either the fuel tank or the dashboard.
