Hi,

My car has developed a whine (kind of high pitched) that seems to go along with the acceleration, and we haven't been able to isolate it. (It intensifies when I accelerate, then drops with the engine RPM as the car shifts.) I took it to the dealer, and he's stumped, too (that, or he's saving me from pre-Holiday expense.)

He said it isn't the transmission because the sound is there when the car is in park, as well as in gear. (Whew!) He ruled out the fuel pump because the sound is coming from the front. He didn't think it was a belt. (I was hoping for the easy fix.) He's thinking it might be a bearing....

Any ideas? I was trying to find that list of common J30 problems, although I think my car has already had them all (except the transmission, knock on wood.) I have a 93 J30 with 99, 400 miles.

Thanks in advance,

Marianne

It could still be transmission pump whine. Mine always gets worse when it's cold. I can hear it in every Q I've ever driven... All of the remans, Q1, Q2, whatever.

Other possibilities are the p/s pump, idler bearings (most likely?) etc. They should be able to isolate it with a mechanics stethoscope.http://www.harborfreight.com/c...41966

Mine went away. I dont know why. Maybe it was a pulley.

Thought I'd post a follow up in case anybody's searching the site with a similar noise.

I kept driving the car until the noise got too loud to miss. It really followed the engine's acceleration, and then added a loud rattle, especially when cold. (It wasn't pretty!)

Took it back to the dealer, and they were able to diagnose it immediately. It was the air conditioner compressor pulley - (I hope I have the name right - I took it off the work order.)

They replaced the pulley and the three belts attached to it - the fan, compressor, and power steering belts. Voila! No noise.

My dealer's great. If only they could do something about those high hourly labor charges (sorry, Q45Tech and others.)

The VVT gear/solenoid assembly does make a noise when they wear out, watch out for the CAS mounting foot wear also as the miles pile up.

Not sure that Infiniti dealers are that much higher than other brands as $70-75 is standard for independent shops in ATL now vs $90-$100.......doubtful that much over 10 hours per year will be consummed plus $1,200-$1,500 in parts on average.
