my 97 j30 cranks great but wont start. this is not the first time i've had this problem. generally if it sits overnight or for a long while it will start right up. Any ideas what this might be?

Could be flooded.
Try holding the pedal the whole way down and crank it.
It may take awhile but it should sputter and belch black exhaust till it smooths out.
FYI Holding the gas pedal down before you try to start shuts off the injectors.

The reason it starts after sitting overnight is if a cylinder is flooded, the fuel will seep past the rings into the crankcase.
That is NOT a good thing.
Fuel in the oil will destroy the Crank bearings with a quickness.
It will evaporate out when thing's heat up but the damage is done when it starts up cold.

The VG30DE engine in the J and 300zx is not designed for short trips, a series of short trips or trips where the engine isn't fully warmed up at conclusion. This is a high performance engine, which was pretty cutting edge in the early 90's. Always ensure the engine is fully warmed up before turning it off.
