Hello;

I have a '93 J30 and need to take it in for a brake job. Is there anything I should be aware of, or is it a pretty straightforward job. I would also like to get a minor tune-up done, however money is tight so I need to be selective. I will do the obvious things like fluid changes, air filter, fuel filter, maybe get them to install a "stick-open" thermostat. Is there anything else I should have them do that would be affordable? I should have a radiator flush, but I don't think I can afford that at the moment. Also, I bought a dash kit for the car and it has a surround for the shifter. Does anyone know how to remove the shift knob? I was also thinking that since the sunroof seems to be problematic on these vehicles, is there any preventitive maintenance I can perform on it. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanx.

Brake Job-- I dont know.... But it would be a GRAND time to flush all the brakes and replace the fluid with valvoline synthetic brake fluid.......

Filters-- Get ONLY (especially fuel filter, you dont want crappy filters clogging you injectors) NISSAN OEM filters...... Best place is to get them from Joe at scottsdale......... http://www.infinitipartsusa.com

Along with an oil change, it would be good to possibly get a transmission flush, and if you have the cash, get a pressurized fuel rail flush (preferably a BG flush)...... Along with that, do an engine decarb...... Goto your nearest GM dealer, and pick up a can of TOP ENGINE CLEANER (the liquid NOT the aerosol), and run that through the brake booster line....... I got a tiny funnel and just poured little amounts of the stuff into the hose....... get a friend to keep the RPMs around 1500.......

And if you are going to get a thermostat (i dont know what a stick open tstat is, but if it is one that stays open all the time, its no good), it would be good to flush the cooling system...... I am going to do that this weekend, along with a TSTAT change.... I would run some of that prestone radiator cleaner stuff for about 100 miles prior to flushing.....

And when you flush, fill with 70% water, 1 bottle of redline watter wetter, and the rest AF........

Infiniti/nissan brake pads and new shims are a must. Otherwise you will get some sqeeling even with high grade aftermarket.

Hard to tell condiition of the rotors but depending on mileage may need to be replaced. Again infiniti/nissan would be the best. Bought some autoparts store premiums and they were really warped compared to infiniti tandards.

Definately do a brake flush at this time and use a synthetic if you can find it.

No car today has a real tune up as the term was originally meant. Plugs, use only th factory recomended (do a search).

Air filter

Fuel filter.

Throttle body cleaning (easy to do by yourself)

If at all possible learn to do things do-it-yourself (DIY) as this will save money and you will know it is done right. Have had alot of bad experience with shops not doing the job right and having to redo it . Now I only DIY unless it is something internal to transmission/engine

Then engine on the J is the same as the 300Z so there is a site that will help with detailed info on cleaning and changing stuff. Use it as a guide http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnettech/tech.aspx

Good luck and enjoy your car

thanx for the info.a "stick-open" thermostat is obviously not the correct term, but i heard about one that if it fails, fails open not closed, thereby allowing the fluids to still flow freely.can anyone help me with how to remove the shift knob. i can't find any reference to that anywhere and i really don't want to go see my local infiniti shop. also can i put some lube/grease on the sunroof tracks to help it move as easily as possible ... if so are there any particular products which are better than others. cheers.

I believe that is the thermostat type the factory installs. Sorry, can't help with the shift knob, though I've read that on the 240s, you just have to PULL on it. Try doing a search...I know the sunroof question has come up before.

not true.

case in point: powerslot rotors from brembo blanks and stillen brake pads for Q45 on my car. they do not sqeak. they do not squeal.

use silicone dampender (i.e. permatex disc brake quiet) on the back of the pads and on the shims.

this time, i didnt even replace the shims.

no squeak.

nothing wrong with OEM either, just proving it isnt the ONLY way.
