hey whats up, im kinda of new to the whole forum aspect of my 240, but i do know a fair amount about my car. i just went turbo, 14 psi on stock motor with 111xxx miles on and it loves it, but now i really want to drift more(i do it almost everyday when i come home from school ) and i just got my setup on not to long ago, and have been thinking of what i want to do about my open diff, well my funds are limited cuz i just dumped 4000 into my turbo setup and i can get the j30 diff swapped into my 1991 240sx coupe for 350, well im waiting to decide on what i want to do, so any feedback would be nice thanks

get a real differential (not a VLSD like found in stock nissans). something like a kaaz, nismo or cusco would be best. a VLSD is better than an open diff but still will never compare to a mechanical LSD. and stop drifting on the street. dont be an idiot, go to a racetrack. and no bitching about how much it is if you just dropped 4k into a turbo setup. 300$ for 2 full days of driving and drifting is a drop in the bucket.

hey man. i just recently watched the formulaD comp, and i talked to one guy who was only running the j30 vlsd... he could control it pretty good. but like he said ^ it's not nearly as good as an aftermarket mechanical. i know you're low on funds, i think im actually goin with the vlsd too entirely cause of the money... and i might as well since im just learning how to drift ill work my way up...

so, a vlsd (250 - 350) works, and you can drift it. but it would be much easier with the mechanical (750 - 1250 depending).

and check out drift day/night at whatever track is nearest you, thats how im learnin. lots of cool people there

peace bro

REAL LSD's are hella exspensive

get a VLSD if your on a budget

and as for drifting in the streets keep it in a secluded area away from everything and everybody

i understand that some places don't have tracks to drift on and we need practice where we can get it. So keep it safe.

once again, he just dropped 4,000$ on a turbo kit, another 700 for a nice differential isnt much.

If your low on money, and serious about drifting then you can get a welded diff. and if anyone tells you that its too rough for the street they are just a Bozo or a panzee. i ve had one for over 7 months on my s14, and its very bareable.

I really don't see any flaming going on in this thread, so chill. A lot of n00bs come on this and other boards with their guard up, and ironically get flamed for overreacting to sound advice. LOL. If I have one piece of advice for all newbies, it's that they should not be so combative when someone with more knowledge and experience argues with them. If you want self-affirmation, go to a counseling center. If you want car advice, swallow your pride and listen to what your new-found peers have taken the time to share with you. [/digression]

Anyway, I'd go with the mechanical LSD. Yes, they are more expensive, but they are also purpose built, and can handle whatever abuse you throw at them. You can't say that about a J30 VLSD... eventually the oil will break down, and you better damn well hope it isn't when you need it to be there.

So save up for a little while and you'll be glad you went with a quality part. Hell, it might even outlast your motor if you keep boosting 14psi without a quality MAF. LOL. 14psi on a stock KA24DE? I hope you have some kind of crazy retarded timing and a standalone controlling all that. Your motor might not make it to your LSD install.

my experience is second hand from my friend who has vlsd, he says its kind of hard because it locks after the slipping already starts, so it starts like an open diff, then goes to locking, so its kind of hard to guess when it will lock.

i personally run a welded, its not that bad, i would suggest that route
