Three years ago houster2001’s query about how to retrieve the ABS malfunction code on his 1997 J30 ultimately went unsolved. He was following the factory service manual (FSM) that said to locate the ABS check connector under the dash, ground it, and the code would display by blinking the ABS light. Other NICO members tried to help by referring him to NICO's online FSMs, but the manuals only repeated what he already knew. He never located the check connector and the thread ended with no resolution.

After I got an ABS light myself, I wanted to retrieve my code, but had run into the same issue of not being able to find the ABS check connector. At first, I was encouraged to find houster2001’s question, but of course it did not resolve the issue. However, I was able to solve the mystery myself. For the 1997 model year, Infiniti had issued a supplement to the J30 manual. The brakes section was one of several revised sections. My FSM has the supplement which provides a revised procedure. Instead of a separate ABS check connector, the 1997 J30's use one of the terminals in the Consult connector. When terminal 4 is grounded, the ABS light blinks the malfunction code.

In reading other NICO threads about ABS lights, the consensus was that the most likely cause was the ABS relay. My code was 61 that translated as “actuator motor or motor relay”. After further testing it turned out to be the relay, just as predicted, and the cheaper of the two possibilities by far.

Now I have two further issues. First, can we get the 1997 J30 supplement posted to NICO’s FSM section?

Second, I would like to erase the malfunction code. The code is stored until it is erased. I followed the procedure to erase the ABS malfunction code several times, but it does not work. It is not a big deal, as the ABS light no longer comes on, but it just kind of bugs me that I can't get rid of that stored code. Has anyone had any experience with this?
