Took my '93 J30 in to the shop i use to get a couple of minor things done. change oil, change fuel filter, air filter, check brakes ... stuff like that. also wanted to get the rad flushed and change the thermostat. Told me it was three hours labour to get at the thermostat ... is that possible? seems incredible to me.

Car has 85,000kms on it (about 52,000 miles).Didn't get the work done, just want to try and find out if it really takes 3 hours to change the thermostat. They claim that the front of the engine has to be virtually disassembled to get at it. if that is true, i'll wait till spring and get the timing guide changed as well.thanx.

The thermostat is normally changed when the timing belt is replaced. There are a number of other things to replace while your in there because the thermostat is buried.

93 and 94 Js had timing belts that need to be changed after 60k miles (100k kms). You can wait till then unless you're having problems now. The new belt will be good for 105k miles (160k kms).

Do a site search for J30 timing belts and you will get tons of good info for miles and miles (kms and kms) of trouble free driving pleasure.

In the mean time, do a transmission pan drop and filter change. Perfect time to do it with your mileage. Switch to synthetic fluids and GO CANUCKS GO!

Are you having symptoms of a bad t-stat, or is this just preventive maintenence?

vimy- im pretty sure there is a cutoff in the 94 model year when they switched to 105k timing belts, because i checked my service history and they checked my build date and assured me that I didnt need to do it until then.

unless yours is overheating or something, just wait till the T belt is replaced, at that point you can go over the water pump, idlers, and your tstat.

thanx for all the info. i'm not having any problems with overheating, i just wanted to get a cooling system flush since the car is ten years old and has probably never been done. changing the thermostat was just a part of that process. anywho, will wait until i change the timing chain.

You can flush the cooling system without having to change the thermostat. Use Nissan coolant or the orange stuff and distilled water. Some add "water wetter" anti bubble stuff. The proceedure is in the manual.

also of note, i believe at either 105k miles, or 10 years, the airbag system should be checked by a certified tech.
