So I've been debating between rebuild & buying a longblock, and I went to my parents' family mechanic and asked him to see what a longblock would cost. He said he went through a company that imported them straight from Japan and he would look it up.

To myself I was thinking there's no way he would find it since they never used a KA24E in the Silvia, but I figured i would let him try. To my shock he called me back later the same day and told me that his distributor had them, and it would be $945 w/2 day shipping, and may or may not come with all of the manifolds/pumps, etc. He also said it was guaranteed to have less than 30K miles on it, and would have some sort of warranty with it.

I was mindboggled at this, thinking the japs only used the KA24E in their pickups, but I told him ok, and I would let him know within a few days.

Did they ever use a KA over there!?!?!?!? He insists this is a Japanese engine, but I would swear it was never used over there. Is my knowledge just not as good as I thought, or is something wrong with this picture?

I am going to recheck with him today and get the name of the importing company and details of the warranty, etc.

why do a KA24E if you're gonna pull the motor and put a new one in?

When shops like that do motor swaps... they generally just use the bare block and swap over all of your accessories.

When my mom blew the engine in our Honda, they took out the F22 and put in an F20 and swapped all the accessories and manifolds over, plus the USDM stuff has different parts on it for smog requirements that the Jap manifolds didn't have.

The reason i'm doing it this way is because I'm a big fan of the KA24E...reliability, gas mileage, and more torquey than an SR20. That, and I have no money. What I will probably do is store my 2 spare KA's and over time try to teach myself to rebuild a motor (with the help of a few experienced friends of course). Then I plan to either buy a beater 240, or one with a nice body & blown motor and use whichever has the nicer body with the performance motor, and the other one will have the other motor as a daily driver.

Not to mention that from my experience SOHC parts are much cheaper (read: timing set) and it's easier to work on

not a fan of the DOHC, and CA parts = expensive & difficult to find....not to mention I don't have the knowledge/skill/money to do it myself.

Back to the original reason for the post....do you guys think this would be ok to do, or would i have problems in the future finding parts and such?

the parts for a ca are not hard to find, in fact we had an almost identical engine in the pulsar 1.8L. And they arent that hard to find...

you should be able to get a working ka24e for much cheaper than that stateside... go check out a junkyard of something... I'm also worried about this "may not contain all manifolds and pumps" thing

Do the sohc up. All these people telling you otherwise just don't know the potential it has. I'm doing a kaet as well at the moment. I think I have a whole $200 in 3 complete engines and another head. It's still not cheap but it has potential, go for it mang.

DO the KAE-T ... the pontential is outrageous for the motor as long as you know how to build it up right and what to build up before you boost it. Like bearins. Piston heads, Rocker arms, valve Springs... all that stuff... They are good for 10lbs but are weak after more boost... You do that and the torque on it will be outrageous
