Looking at this engine block number is there anyway one can tell whether it's a J13 or J15.  Or are there any (not so obvious) features that would help me identify this beast.

Would a J15 engine gasket set work on a J13.  I'm trying to establish what I've got here before I start ordering and maxing out my credit card

Also...are the molded carpets for the 520 suitable for the L320 with maybe some minor adjustments.

Thanks for the advice...Harold

My J16 clearly says 'J16' on the block and I've seen J15's and they say 'J15'.  Since your's just has the letter 'J', I'd say it's a J13.   The head gaskets are different between the J13 and the J15 due to the larger bore of the J15.  The J13 uses the same head gasket as a E1.  The J15 and J16 use the same one.  As far as the carpet goes, I'm not really sure but I think that there is enough difference between a 320 and a 520 that you'd probably be better off just cutting bulk carpet to fit your 320.

Stephen - thanks for the info.  I was very surprised to hear about your J16 engine.  Does that mean it's around 1600cc's?  If it is... I quess it would be about the same size as the L16 overhead cam engine in the later models.  That's pretty cool.

Getting back to the orignal theme...are all J13 engines labeled that way (such as mine) with only a "J" followed by a series of numbers.  I'd like to hear from any J13 engine owners out there whose engine numbers are like mine in the picture.

Thanks...Harold

I had a J13 for a while but I really don't recall the markings.  I've seen a few in the junkyards and noticed the 'J' without the '13' on them.  The J16 is 1587cc, J15 is 1483, J13 is 1299 and the E1 is 1189.  There is actually a J18 that from what I've read was used in Central America.  I tried to get one a few years ago but the shipping would have been way too much for a used engine.  I bought my J16 from an importer in 1997.  It cost less than $300 including shipping.  They're pretty hard to find now.  It came with the correct mounting plate that allowed me to use the 200SX five speed and 280Z clutch.  That, along with the 1600 Roadster differential with 320 side gears and a custom driveshaft allows me to drive at freeway speeds with no problem.  The only thing that makes that kind of scary is that I still have the stock brakes.
