ok i have a 93 j30t it has started makeing a whining sound that can be heard best in the car i have looked under the hood with it running and cant hear it . but in the car it sounds like its coming from the transmission tunnel or the passenger floorboards does it the loudest at an idle in park or neutral but increases with the rpms but when under a load like putting it in gear it quiets down any ideas on where to start looking????

Is it a whine or a screech? Does it happen at start up?

Most likely the engine solenoid. Very common age related issue.

The first thing you need to do is drain about a litre of oil from your engine and replace with a litre of quality full synthetic oil like Mobil1 or Pennzoil.

See if this quiets it down.

Another go way to test is to add a half litre of transmision fluid to your oil and see if that quiets it down. However, I recommend changing the oil and oil filter right after the test.

The VTC solenoid is located towards the back of the engine. Its half under the cover and half out side. You can find it by listening for it.

In J30 FSM look in the EC section. There is a diagram.

Its starts as a intermittent whine, progresses to a steady ticking and evolves into a diesel sound.
