the good:I currently have a wrecked 240sx with the nearly complete block less camshaft, timing cover, distributor, and water pump.

the bad:I need to purchase and install all of the missing parts and swap the completed motor into my other 240sx and only have minimal funds until mid to late january.

What should I do?I have tracked down a complete ready to drop in '91 de w/ harness, and ecu for $550.00 leaving me to only have to find a distributor and gauge cluster for a working tach. Or do I complete the '89 block and (no money invested yet) and drop it in? I am currently just trying to get my car off jack stands and on the road.

Sounds like you have an incomplete SOHC or can buy a DOHC for $550.

And you have no money. Big question - is this your only mode of transit? What kind of coin are you looking at in January? Can you wait?

I'f I was going to do a build, I'd go with the DOHC hands down.

But if you have no $$ and no car, I'd find the parts for the SOHC and use the rest of your money for miscelaneous stuff. Is the SOHC worth the swap?

You have to look at the overall picture. Are you doing a build or just getting back on the road?

What are you doing with the wrecked car? Have you considered parting it out?

1) No this is not my only mode of transit but my current driver will go to my brother once he gets his license (May) 2) January I should have around $800 depending on what my books cost this semester. 3) My soon to be dirver can wait as it has been I am currently finding time to get back to them (my cars) because they are at our other house an hour away. The wrecked one (not my driver) I am going to start stripping tomorrow/today (12:06 central time zone) and will be posting parts in the classifides section. Items include doors w/o inner door panel, dash (black and uncracked), mirrors may go with doors, 5speed transmission w/ pedals and clutch master cylinder, stock tail lights, hatch w/ no rust, passanger seat, fenders mind you it was in minor front end collision (driver rearended a truck) so the fenders are not in the best of shape but decent enough. When I am ready to sell I will post picks of each. Thanks for your input.

Please tell me you're not planning on spending student loan money on car mods. If that's the case, I would go the cheepest route possible.

Yes I will be using some of my student loan money and yes I am trying to go the cheapest route possible. This is what I have found on ebay and classifieds. Sohc: Timing cover @ $80, full gasket set $50-$80 (ebay), new timing set (gears, tensionor, chain, guides) @ $50, camshaft from nissan motorsports $200, or JWT camshaft $375, nismo motor mounts $195 (all three), distributor haven't priced one (will need for sohc or dohc), engine lift (will need for both). For the Dohc: engine (including ecu and harness) $550, nismo motor mounts $195 (all three), distributor ?, clutch $200 and up, radiator (will need for both) $92 oem style koyo-$300 racing koyo, exaust header unknown price. I'm sure there is more but this is what I am expecting as of now.

If you're looking at cams for the SOHC, most require milling of cam towers. The NISMO R4 doesn't at $300. But if you are going to do that, you might just as well get the DOHC with 15HP already there. Why do you need NISMO motor mounts and a KOYO radiator? The clutch is a good idea since you have it out already but headers?

I guess only you know your financial situation but it sounds like you are trying to do a build with no money.

Anyway, if you're determined to do a build, go with the DOHC. Way more aftermarket support. Especially if you decide to go turbo. Plus, 15 extra HP out of the box.

The best thing for you to do though, would be to put the SOHC together with junkyard parts and focus on school.

If I do the dohc I won't touch the sohc and I will need mounts because the car the engine is going into doesn't have any. If I use the sohc I would just unbolt the mounts from the frame and bolt them into the other car. Niether one of the cars in my possesion have a radiator so that is a definite expense and I am going to purchase the cheaper oem style. Distributor is also a definite expense. Dohc will also need headers because the log style on the sohc (from what I've read on this forum) will not bolt to the dohc head. The clutch for the dohc is also definite because I am buying solely the engine w/o trans.

I'd stick with the SOHC.

I'm sure you can find a stock cam and everything else you need dirt cheep if you look around these boards. Get your timing kit and be done.

If you start doing a build - it's going to get expensive.

Ummm, I have a SOHC cam, water pump, and a front timing cover I'll sell you for way less than what you just posted... I'm 95% sure the motor I have doesn't have the distributor, but I can check when I go to the shop this weekend. Anyways if you're interested send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll give you a price on all this stuff.

Thanks Skidmark I'll send you an e-mail now I do have another question for you though. I am still debating on the dohc because I know I am getting some assitance from my parents to help get it on the road but they are not fronting the whole note. I'm not sure if I stated earlier in the post but I will have some parts to sell (still stripping the other car). Just out of curiosity what does a 5 speed swap go for (parts only)?

Unfortunately the car that I stripped does not have any of the rear interior panels the guy who had the car before me stripped mostly everything from the back and was using it to drift.

I sent you a reply w/ a price on that stuff. It's low enough to make the SOHC your best bet for getting the car roadworthy without blowing all your $. If you decide to go DOHC later on then you still won't have lost your butt just to get the car running. Let me know soon cuz I'm going out of town to the garage tomorrow and won't have internet till I get back on Sunday.

considering that you're in Magnolia (about 2 minutes North of me) I'm sure we can find you a better deal than $550 for a complete DE with harness.

I picked one up a week ago for less than $150 with harness.
