Half shafts ARE the axles, and I'm pretty sure the splines from the 300zx half shafts (NA) fit right into the oem 240sx hubs. That means you can keep the 4 lug, but 5-lug is always an option to you. I'm pretty sure the R230 differential will require some subframe modification to fit (different bolt pattern).

I would get the axles if they're priced well. I bought my beefier tt axle for $68 shipped, and picked one up from a junk yard for $10. I had to rebuild a boot on each one, but the Raybestos boot from Rock Auto is only $9 right now, and probably for a limited time.

Don't quote me, but I think you can actually take the cover off of your 240sx open differential and bolt it onto the 300zx vlsd. If that's the case, then it would make life a lot easier for you. I don't know what else has to be done, I just know the R230 is bigger and has a 2-bolt design, while the 240sx has a 4-bolt. I used a Q45 differential with the cover from my 240sx diff... so I can only research and speculate otherwise. Good luck!
