The back corner of the hood catches the corner of the fender when opening the hood

That's what I highly suspected

Have you have some body work recently or maybe hit a large pothole?

It sound like you have a body alignment issue. The best way to check your body lines is to run your finger in the openings in the body panel (around door, hood, trunk edges).

I would say to run your finger around the sides of the hood. You should expect a gap of ~1/8" around the whole edge of the hood and fenders. I suspect you will notice a larger gap on the left side, if not then your fender is elevated. At that point I would check the gap in the passenger side door to the P/s fender.

If any of these things are found to be excessive you may want to contact a body shop for a thorough estimate and evaluation.

I did take the car to the dealership just before my warranty ran out. they said this was not a warranty problem, did a little minor work at no charge, two months later the problem resurfaces. thats why I suspect that maybe the hood hinge may actually be loose --- I dont know how the hinge is secured to the body, I thought maybe if it is secured with faxteners they were loose.
