i was driving around about a week ago when all of a sudden my car started running really bad, unstable idle and when i would take off it would bog like crazy. it's been to the point where the only way i can move is to rev it a little and keep popping out the clutch. sometimes it will run perfect but most times it bogs every time i came from a stand still and a little every time i shift. i'm now 100% sure that theres no water in my gas tank and i don't know what else it could be. my distributor is the only thing i've been having a problem with lately, i have a 95+ motor in a 92 fastback, it has a 92 distributor on it and it's impossible to set the timing on it. 1 tooth in either direction make's it 5-10 degrees off. do i need a 95 distibutor with a 92 cap. or do i use a 95 cap and not use my ground wire?does this even seem reasonable or do i have bigger problems?thanks for any help in advance

the 95's have a different distributor on em. the ignition coil is built into em while the s13 dohc distributors had em seperate. Sounds like you're trying to change the timing by moving the distributor via it's geared section. Loosen the two bolts that are holding the distributor and rotate the head around and see if you can get the timing dead on from there.

i have spent hours doing that. 1 tooth up 1 tooth back and there is no correct position.

reset it back to TDC. Rotate the motor manually till you see the two cam sprockets lined up to their silver links and the crank pulley to 0 degrees. Then pull the distributor out and correct the distributor position to what the FSM says. Then fine adjustment via rotation of the distributor after loosening the two bolts. Do it that way otherwise you'll spend many more hours of frustration trying to get it right.

i know. thats exactly what i did but when it comes to fine tuning it cant be done. i get to the extent of one tooth then move it to the next but then it's too far the other way. there just seems like to much of a change between one tooth and the next

your not moving it in increments of teeth...the gear teeth stay meshed and you rotate the distributor inside its boar. Notice how the holes on the distributor were it mounts to the head are slotted? leave the bolts in, but loose and twist the distributor.

wooooo. i just pulled off the head in 1 hr and 35 min. drained fluids set at tdc and even cleaned off the old gasket. that has to be a record. head bolts don't come till tomorrow so it should work tomorrow night.

check the block and head for flatness. I'd offer you my ex-gf to check it across her chest but as far as I know, it's physically impossible to get it that flat. Do the next best thing while you're waiting though, take it to a machinist to get decked.
