Ok I am having a problem with my vert. It wont shut off when I turn it off. It stays on for about 5 seconds and then dies (deisels). It did it once before and then just went away. And since this has started, the idle has been lower than usual and when I am at a constant speed or rpm it starts to surge. Can anyone help me?

I really wish that I could help you out... but I really don't have any advise. I've never heard of this happening. It sounds like there could be a problem with the ecu or something.. for a gasoline engine to continue to fire after the ignition has been shut off it, there has to continue to be fuel pumped into the cylinders and either spark or if the cylinder is hot enough it could be enough to ignite the fuel... it could also be a wiring issue with the ignition where the ecu doesn't realize that the ignition has been cut off.... sorry that I haven't been any more help. Good luck and I hope that you find an answer!

I'm not an expert in cars, but as a comp sci major when something is wrong, i know that the first step is to reboot my PC.(most of the time)

So disconnect your battery cables, to reset the system.

dieseling happens when the combustion chamber gets very hot while running. after you remove the key, the car will keep running even after spark, combusting with heat and pressure in the cylinder (similar to a diesel engine, hence the name.)

is the car overheating? check the heat range on the spark plugs you are using. i also think carbon in the chamber can cause this. try running some seafoam through.

The car is not overheating at all. Even if I start it up early in the morning and try to turn it off right away it will do the same thing.

I would look into a bad coil/distributor, or possibly a blown headgasket exposing air to the cylinder.

Especially on older cars, a hole in the headgasket exposing extra oxygen to the combustion chamber creates a super lean condition causing excess heat, and will make the car idle rougher than normal.

Start by putting in premuim gasoline. If possible run it for a while at highway speeds.Next step would be Seafoam. One way to cut the run-on (which is the actual name for it) short, would be to leave the car in gear with your foot on the brake when you turn the engine off. The additional load from an auto will help the engine halt. If you have a 5-speed, let the clutch out slowly to kill the engine also. Remember... foot on the brake!

That sucks. What is seafoam? Maybe I should try that first before I start ripping the head off.

its worth a shot to try the seafoam first but there is a good chance of blown headgasket. seafoam is a cleaner for your engine. it cleans the inside by dissolving carbon deposits and other nasty stuff. you can also use carb cleaner but its not as good and should not go in your tank. seafoam is nice because you can dump some down the plug holes, some in your intake manifold(engine running) and some in the gas tank. i have done it with bg44k as well.

Dre - Seafoam is available at NAPA.

Bring the ol' gal over and we'll give her a good scrubbin'.
