Finished up the engine swap on the 95 G20t tonight.

Put at 27K mile 2001 JDM lowport roller-rocker takeout engine in her (not sure what it was from)....

We had a problem with the intake manifold from the old car (apparently it was cracked and we didn't know it), so we got to pull the mani AFTER the engine was in and everything was connected...

Fired it up and it purrs beautfully. Took it out for a gentle drive to the gas station and the car wash, and then took it for a little more spirited drive just now.

Great power. Needs springs / wheels / tires. VLSD is awesome.

Couple minor issues: Single-lead temp gauge sensor wire has too high resistance, so temp gauge starts at halfway. Only one cooling fan turns on (think it's related to the temp gauge sensor), and the A/C compressor doesn't kick on (think the compressor or clutch is shot), and driver's window doesn't work.

Pretty neat car, and even better when I tally up the cost:

$600 car$45 towing$450 engine$460 clutch, axles, gaskets, waterpump, plugs, fluids, radiator, cap/rotor, t-stat, etc. etc. etc.....

Will post pics of the whole process soon.

You need to use the temp sensor from your old motor. THe JDM temp sensor reads different voltage.

Eh, that one's welded to the manifold. Literally.

Actually, according to the manual, there's power from the ign source, through the gauge, to the sensor, and it reads resistance.

I'll swap it out one more time just to be certain tho.

The old

The new

Old, gunked-up, overheated 150K mile SR20

Fresh, clean, 27K mile JDM takeout

You GOTTA paint the valve cover

One and only setback - Oops, cracked the manifold

Another interesting side note Notice the difference between the JDM intake mani and the USDM intake mani.

The JDM one has what basically amount to velocity stacks, which extend up into an "airbox" (the upper intake manifold after the throttle body)… Whereas the USDM splits off (very restrictively) into individual runners, at a harsh 90-degree angle, right after the throttle body….

I have the JDM manifold, if someone wants to send me some gas money and pay for shipping it - Test it out, I'd bet it makes a lot more power than the USDM manifold (needs to be someone from a non-emissions state though)

Nicely done! Like the gold valve cover myself. Greg, there is a OBX style SS autochrome header on ebay. They are like 180 shipped. Dyno proven 12hp. A friend of mine just put one on his JDM swapped G, sounds good. Not raspy at all. Think I'm going to have to buy one for my G. If I don't sell it for this 28k original mile S14 that has been found.

Well done!

It looks good, good paint job on the VC too.

I'd be interested in hearing how that mani changes things too.

Winsticle - I didn't use the JDM mani - You want it?

I have 2 spare manifolds, 2 TB's and a dead SR engine.

How dare you tempt me, Greg.

Mike (240kid) and I were talking about this last night. We think we could get that crack fixed pretty easily from a local welder.

I'm quite tempted to do it, my stock intake mani looks like restriction hell, and the price is right...

I want to be an *** and tell you you should bring it with you to NOPI, since I'll see you there, but that's a pain to pack.

Find out how much it is to ship and I'll see if I can scrounge up a few bucks post-turbo-install to make this sucker breath. Though I'll have to get to know my emissions monkeys real well...

The cracks are in the USDM mani, not this one. The JDM mani is perfect.

I'll see what shipping would be.

BTW, took the G out for a pretty spirited spin today - it screams. Much more power than I expected.

Oh, good job of reading I apparently did. Even better, cracks are bad.

It's not a bad little motor, and yeah, it makes angry noises. Personally, I like the angry noises .

Nice job Greg. I totaly forgot you had a G20 engine swap going on, now that it's not on Infinti General. I don't make it much to the G20 forum. Goodluck with the G.

Threw the wheels and tires on this week.... Got the rims for $200 off ebay (NICOmom and my son picked them out), and the tires from a local 240 owner (gently used)...

Not bad for a car that cost me (so far) $1350.

Nice work! Clean, quick, and cheap?? My word, it's an engineering trifecta!

Now I'm really motivated to buy a house with a garage (so I can have space/shelter to do more work than sunny, non-freezing-my-arse-off days will allow.

That is a damned nice car.

I'm starting to find low-mileage transverse SR's in cereal boxes, they're CHEAP for what they are.

Nice G20,

I bought a 93 with a rod knock on Ebay for 800 bux in pristine condition with just 2 small rust spots developing on the shock towers around the welds

I ended up putting a DET in it. 3 diff turbo setups later, found what I wanted GT28RS, 740cc injectors (old turbo setup needed it), Z32 MAF, BBird ECU, S-AFCII handling the rest
