When your car is declared a Total Loss ("totalled"), they pay you the amount of money it would cost to replace your car with another one of the same year, model, and mileage, less your deductible (for most people, $500). fairly often, especially with older cars, you have to argue with the insurance company to make sure they give you what you are due, and to not try to undercut you by basing the replacement off of wholesale instead of retail.Vahagn23 wrote:so the insurance paid for the new car?
My wreck experience was very similar. The insurance adjuster said they use NADA, but that they did not have any prices on the 07 Versa since it was so new. So they gave me invoice + taxes & fees - .15 per mile. They were within $250 of payoff. I'm waiting to see if they came up with the addtional $250 or if GAP will cover it, or if I make a payment & then collect from GAP. Anyway I got in a new Versa that was optioned nicer for about the same money.BillyBeaneBall wrote:Yeah...basically they paid off the old car (which I had taken a loan out on...) And it took about 2 months for the rebates on the GAP insurance and Extended Warranty to come in the mail. But between the time they totalled out my car and I got those rebates I needed transportation so I looked for a new car with basically a $600 down payment (that I was able to stretch to $1000 with a $400 loan my Dad gave me until the GAP rebate came in the mail)
This time, since I knew what I wanted (another V), I shopped over the internet and emailed a few Nissan dealers and got one about 15 miles away to agree to a price. I gave them my down payment of $1000 they got the car from another dealership (in Indiana) and that Tuesday I went in and signed the papers and drove off with a MUCH NICER V than the one I had before. My payment was about $15/month higher because the car cost $500 more than my old one and I didn't have as much money to put down. But my interest rate was lower due to promotional financing as well. To tell the truth I was worried about the finances initially...even with the GAP insurance, which is supposed to take care of any amount the insurance doesn't pay in a situation like this. But it worked out fine...luckily for me.
Again though, this is not something I EVER want to repeat...I drive like an old lady now...not that I was driving bad before but now I bet I'm obnoxious to follow
