About 30 minutes ago, I started the Q for the first time since I started the chain guide, fuel injector, alternator, pulleys, belts, hoses, rocker cover reseal, knock sensor, power steering pump re-seal, and general engine compartment restoration project. LOL

Honestly, I was shocked when it started up faster than the Honda this morning. What a non-event!

The first run was for 1 minute, second for 2 minutes, third for three and so on.. No leaks anywhere so far.

The power steering pump picked up a lot of air in the system as makes the classic whining noise. It may take a while to work the air out of the system. The car is sitting on jack stands so I've been turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock.

As soon as I get up from this computer, I will be taking the laptop with ECUTalk downstairs to run a full round of diagnostoc tests. I know the IAC valve needs to be adjusted as the idle is too fast.

I've got a few tests to run using a TCU from a 1994 model -- also with the NICO ECU.

I'm not sure how far I will get here tonight as I've been up working on it for the past 36 hours. I just wanted to have it running before Monday.

Many thanks to everybody here for all of the great technical guidance.

Will post more tomorrow.

Craig

Awesome! That first start-up after a major repair is always so stressful until it happens. Like Wes said, warm it up and flog it for a while... you've earned it!

Way to go! Big jobs are always rewarding when they start up smooth on the first try. Now all you have to do is drive it like you stole it!!!

Yesterday I installed the TCU upgrade and the NICO ECU.

Stage II is cool -- though I can definately feel the boost when I click on Stage III.

I need some supension upgrades so I can hold it in the road as the old shocks are long gone..

After warming up what's the idle RPM and the IAC % open?

With the AAC screw turned all the way in it ranges from 650 RPM with AAC @ 23% to 712 with AAC @ 25%

I would open the iac screw a bit. Usually we like to see 10-15% on the iac at warm idle but that's a very nit picky item. Usually about 2 turns will do it

AAC is now set at 10 with some flutter up to 12...

As you can see from the ECUTalk display in the picture below, idle is 825. Idle seems to have crept up when I brought the AAC percentage down. Any suggestions for lowering the RPM? TPS or CPS?

The little hand held unit is quite handy at times like this..

It looks like the TPS is at 0.44v at idle but 825 rpm is a bit high. All my Q's have run at 725-750 rpm. Is the 45 at the end of the 3rd row the timing advance? That seems to be the error built into most of the datascan/consult programs.

Leaving everything the same and with a warm engine what happens when you adjust the idle to about 750 with the IACV adjustment screw? How many turns out from closed does that leave it?

The 45 is the non-US setting which translates into 10 degrees BTDC. To get the idle down in the 700s requires me to run the IACV screw in as far as it will go which pushes the percentage up in the 23 to 25 range with some spikes up to 30.

Something isn't quite right yet if your RPMs are that high. Perhaps an intake leak around one of the plenum to runner gaskets or your CAS adjustment? I would also make sure the throttle cables have the usual slack.

I sprayed brake parts cleaner around the intake connection points and hoses to check for leaks with no increase in RPM.

RPMs settled down to 600-650 when I put it in Drive..

Should I have been checking RPMs in Drive or Reverse?

Could the difference in RPM be from 5 degrees that timing needs to be moved below?

I'll check the reading at 2,000 RPM like the rest of this test.

Here's a snapshot of the readings from July 30 where timing was at 15 deg BTDC using the same software as my current readings that are stuck at 10.

Adjustments should be made in PARK so you're OK.

The owner of the shop where I take my Q felt that TPS voltage could be anywhere in the ballpark of 0.45v so try raising it up to 0.7 and see if you can bring in the idle and IACV % to where it should be. Can you temporarily change the TPS voltage and IACV % from your laptop at the same time?

0.44v is spot on. have you checked the REAL timing with a light yet?

I don't own a timing light. So I will need to get one or take to a place where I can get it checked. I'm beginning to think there may be a leaking head gasket on the driver side.

After letting the car idle for an hour, I get moisture dripping from the driver side exhaust and it doesn't smell like excess gasoline. See following picture.

A head check for engine gasses in the coolant system turned the fluid from blue to a blue green color that indicates a small amount of gas is intering the coolant system. I need to run a compression/leak down test for additional verification..

Intake vacuum pressure at the power brake booster line was 22 at idle.

It would be pretty unusual to see a HG leak if the car has not been overheated.. Typically HG issues only occur when owners cook the heck out of the engines...
