Ok, so I'm not sure quite where to put this, so we'll go with here

About 30 seconds after I start the car and begin driving, I hear a sound very much like a spring losing tension from the front of the car... it's reproducible, but does not feel like it adversely affects anything (no loss of rpm/control etc).

My VW enthusiast friend said he didn't recognize the sound, and we agree that while it doesn't sound horrible, it doesn't sound normal either.

Any ideas? I'm under warranty so taking it in isn't a huge problem, I would just like an idea of how urgent this is...

It's probably the ABS self check. It only happens right after you start the car and move.

This is reassuring, I'm not used to it sounding like a slinky was dropped on my hood

To me it sounds like my foot slipped off one of the pedals. There's a thump and vibration.

Welcome to NICO btw!

Yeah it is the self test. The noise is completely normal. Unless you have any dash lights on (slip,VDC,brake)

I think it sounds like a an electric solenoid activating to me

Also Welcome CrackaLackin

I can't imagine how you guys hear it as anything else... but hey, maybe we should post some pictures of clouds, and have a lively debate on what they look like

Thanks for the welcome, btw

Welcome to the strange and galactic noises of the G, that have little or nothing to do with its performance.

The best way I've been able to describe it is as a whurr noise.
